A handheld device for producing electrospun fibrous mat comprises: a housing configured to be handheld by a user; a container accommodating at least one electrospinning medium; at least a nozzle in fluid communication with the container; a mechanism dispensing the medium from the container via said nozzle; an auxiliary electrode surrounding the nozzle; and a power supply providing electric potentials to the nozzle and the auxiliary electrode. The housing comprises an electrically conductive portion configured to be gripped by the user during operation. The electrically conductive portion is connected to the power supply.

An apparatus for forming a nonwoven material from a liquefied polymer, the apparatus comprising: (a) a precipitation electrode; (b) a dispenser spaced apart from the precipitation electrode, and defining a first axis therebetween, the dispenser being at a first potential relative to the precipitation electrode; and (c) a system of electrodes being laterally displaced from the dispenser, being at a second potential relative to the precipitation electrode and capable of providing an electric field having at least one rotating component about the first axis; the dispenser and the system of electrodes being designed and constructed such that the liquefied polymer is dispensed from the dispenser and forms a plurality of entangled fibers moving in a direction of the precipitation electrode, hence forming the nonwoven material thereupon.

The apparatus includes: (a) a precipitation electrode being for generating the polymer fiber shell thereupon; (b) a dispenser, being at a first potential relative to the precipitation electrode so as to generate an electric field between the precipitation electrode and the dispenser, the dispenser being for: (i) charging the liquefied polymer thereby providing a charged liquefied polymer; and (ii) dispensing the charged liquefied polymer in a direction of the precipitation electrode; and (c) a subsidiary electrode being at a second potential relative to the precipitation electrode, the subsidiary electrode being for modifying the electric field between the precipitation electrode and the dispenser.

Method and apparatus for manufacturing polymer fiber shells via electrospinning

A device for producing a porous fiber structure. One or more points of high surface curvature is produced in a liquefied polymer, such as a polymer solution or a polymer melt. The points of high surface curvature may be produced by forcing the liquefied polymer through narrow nozzles, or by wetting sharp protrusions with the liquefied polymer. The liquefied polymer is charged to a high negative electrical potential relative to a grounded moving belt. Thin jets of liquefied polymer emerge from the points of high surface curvature to impinge as fibers on the moving belt, thereby forming a nonwoven fiber structure of relatively uniform porosity. A powdered aerosol is charged to a high positive electrical potential relative to the moving belt. As the belt moves past the aerosol, the aerosol particles are attracted to fill interstices in the fiber structure, thereby creating a composite filtering material.
