A sequential method for dyeing hair which comprises: contacting the hair with a substantially inactive dye precursor mixture containing at least one primary intermediate and an optional coupler for a period of time, followed by applying a means for aligning the hair and distributing the oxidative dye precursors uniformly, followed by contacting the hair with a developer mixture capable of oxidizing the hair dye precursors to react and form hair color molecules.

The present invention relates to a 2-step methods, and compositions for providing more vibrant, natural and long-lasting color to hair and at the same time reducing hair fiber damage associated with alternative current methods. In the first step the hair is contacted for a period of time with a dye precursor mixture containing specific oxidative hair dye precursors under conditions where these dyes are substantially inactive. Color is then developed in a second step by contacting the hair with a mixture of a peroxide compound and a persulfate salt. Surprisingly the 2-step method leads to considerable 'lift' or lightening without negatively impacting the coloring ability of the oxidative dye. The invention also relates to kits providing the means to accomplish these steps.

Method for providing more vibrant, natural and long-lasting color to hair

A two step method of coloring hair is described. The hair is first contacted for a period of time with a dye precursor mixture containing an oxidative dye, specific fatty components and one or more water miscible organic solvents. Color is then developed in a second step by contacting the hair with one or more oxidizing agents. Greater color intensity and longevity are achieved when the fatty component in the dye precursor mixture contains at least one fatty amine and the fatty ingredients and organic solvents satisfy the relationship, &#x3a3;FC&#x3c;0.037(&#x3a3;OS)&#x2212;3.35(&#x3a3;OS)+63, where &#x3a3;FC and &#x3a3;OS are respectively the total weight of fatty ingredients and the total weight of water miscible organic solvents in the precursor mixture.

A method for coloring hair and removing the color from the hair when desired, comprising coloring the hair with an aqueous hair color composition comprising, in combination: (i) a reducing agent capable of reducing the &mdash;S&mdash;S&mdash; bonds on the hair fiber surface to form reactive &mdash;SH groups; and (ii) a dye molecule containing chemical groups reactive with the &mdash;SH groups on the hair fiber surface to form &mdash;S&mdash;S&mdash; bonds between the dye molecule and the hair fiber surface when the hair color composition is applied to the hair at ambient conditions; wearing the colored hair for the desired period of time; and then removing the color from the hair by contacting the hair with an aqueous based color removal composition containing a reducing agent capable of disrupting the &mdash;S&mdash;S&mdash; bonds between the dye molecule and the hair fiber surface to cause the dye molecule to become disassociated from the hair fiber; and a method for removing dye bonded to the hair fibers via an &mdash;S&mdash;S&mdash; linkage, comprising applying to the hair an aqueous based color removal composition containing a reducing agent capable of disrupting the &mdash;S&mdash;S&mdash; bonds between the dye and hair fiber surface.
