A bladeless shear for bar stock and tubing comprising axially adjacent stationary and moving dies which receive the stock and produce a shearing action by relative lateral displacement. A linear actuator or an electric motor produces the mechanical movement to rotate the drive wheel in alternatingly opposite directions. A mandrel for insertion into the tube is disclosed as well as an hydraulic tube clamp and an adjustable in-feed table.

Supported shear with reversible linear drive and in-feed table therefor

A ram-driven cut-off die set of the double-cut type in which sections of tubing are successively severed from a continuous length of tubing by a notching cut followed by a severing cut wherein improved means are provided for mounting and guiding the notching blade in its notching movement. The improved mounting means comprises an upper shaft positioned over the tube path and extending from one side to the other side of the path, a lower guide shaft positioned totally on the one side of the tube path, and a cross slide having a relatively long upper portion slidably journalled on the upper shaft and a relatively short lower portion journalled on the lower guide shaft to maximize the magnitude of the journalling support provided to the notching blade as it makes its reciprocal movement across the tube path to accomplish the notching cut.

Cut-off die set

Single blade, single cut tubing cut-off apparatus moves a blade along a first path of travel in which a first portion of the blade pierces the tubing and a second path of travel in which a second portion of the blade completes the cut, all in a concerted process. Motion of the blade is controlled by a cam and follower. The tubing is clamped for cutting by a pair of pivotably mounted jaws opened and closed by spring biased cam action.

Single cut die set

A ram-driven cut-off die set of the double-cut type in which sections of tubing are successively severed from a continous length of tubing by a notching cut followed by a severing cut wherein improved means are provided for mounting and guiding the notching blade in its notching movement. The improved mounting means comprises an upper shaft positioned over the tube path and extending from one side to the other side of the path, a lower guide shaft positioned totally on the one side of the tube path, and a cross slide having a relatively long upper portion slidably journalled on the upper shaft and a relatively short lower portion journalled on the lower guide shaft to maximize the magnitude of the journalling support provided to the notching blade as it makes its reciprocal movement across the tube path to accomplish the notching cut.

A shearing apparatus for bar stock comprising a fixed die and a movable die wherein the movable die comprises a shearing ring carried by an arm at a location intermediate the ends of the arm, an eccentric fixed on a driven shaft is journalled in one end of the arm, and the other end of the arm includes a slot which receives a rotationally mounted slide block so that the slot and slide block coact to accommodate combined rotary and translatory movement of that end of the arm. The described arrangement produces an elliptical loop movement of the movable die relative to the fixed die to cleanly shear the stock. Also disclosed is a novel mandrel assembly including a pair of plug members adapted to be positioned within tubular stock to be cut wherein one of the plug members is mounted for selective radial excursion during the shearing operation to accommodate the eccentric movement of the movable die.

Elliptical shearing apparatus

A mandrel apparatus for a tube cutting machine in which the mandrel apparatus is moved into the open end of the tubing advancing along the feed axis of the tubing as the tubing is moved by the feed means into a cutting position. The mandrel apparatus includes a stop member which is mounted for movement between a stop position in which it is positioned across the tube feed path at a location along the feed axis between a rest position of the mandrel and the cutting station and a clear position in which it is pivoted upwardly clear of the feed path. The mandrel apparatus further includes a stripper member having a stripper surface positioned along the feed axis across the feed path between the stop position of the stop member and the rest position of the mandrel. As the tubing is advanced along the feed axis, the mandrel assembly is moved in the opposite direction along the feed axis to pass the mandrel into the advancing open end of the tubing and move the mandrel to the cutting plane within the tubing whereafter, following cutting of the tubing and movement of the stop member to its clear position, the mandrel assembly is moved toward its rest position to move the trailing edge of the cut tubing clear of the cutting station and move the leading edge of the cut tubing against the stripper surface and strip the cut tubing from the mandrel assembly.

Mandrel apparatus

A cutoff apparatus for tubing and the like wherein a single electric motor is used to accelerate the apparatus into synchronous movement with the tubing and is also used to power the cutoff apparatus during the work stroke. A rotary crank is connected to the output shaft of the motor and to a control linkage which substantially reduces the cutoff work stroke length while at the same time preserving substantially the entire acceleration travel distance.

Rotary link driven cutoff machine

Tube cutoff apparatus of the double cut type wherein a horizontal blade passes across and notches a section of tube wall prior to the entry of a vertical severing blade. The horizontal blade holder assembly comprises a carriage which is interconnected with the base by means of a pair of parallelogram links. In one embodiment the horizontal blade holder assembly is driven through an arcuate path of travel by a depending dogleg cam which is mounted on the upper platen assembly of a die set. In a second embodiment the horizontal blade holder assembly is driven by a linkage including a triangular link and a drive link connected to the upper platen assembly. The result in both cases is to drive the horizontal blade holder assembly through an arcuate path which carries it downwardly and away from the path of the vertical blade in a minimum vertical stroke length. In both embodiments, means are provided for adjusting the vertical position of the notching blade relative to the tube section to accommodate tubes of varying diameter.

Double cut die set with improved pull-across notching feature

A runout table for receiving severed lengths of tubing or other workpieces emanating from cutoff presses and discharging the severed lengths laterally on either side of the table. The runout table features pivoted Vee sides which are independently dropped to discharge the severed lengths on either side of the runout table. The pivoting movement is carried out by means of rocker shafts extending down the length of the runout table on either side, equipped with linkages spaced along the length thereof and connected to the respective Vee sides. The rocker shafts serve to provide support of the table Vee sides to prevent sagging of the Vee sides. A pair of power cylinder assemblies operate the rocker shafts acting against adjustable fixed stops which enable quick adjustment of the Vee angle to accommodate tubing of various diameters. An auxiliary cylinder is provided for either side, overcoming dead center conditions in the linkages upon initiation of a pivoting cycle.

Double dump runout table

A tubing cutoff die having a horizontally moving scarfing blade and a vertically moving cutoff blade. The tubing being cut off is held in clamping jaws movably mounted on the lower die shoe of the die and actuated by a cam extending from the upper die shoe. The scarfing blade is also mounted for horizontal reciprocation on the lower shoe and actuated by another cam fixed to the upper shoe. The cutoff blade is mounted on the upper die shoe. The two die shoes are reciprocably connected by post and bushing arrangements. There are three of these disposed so that the centerlines are at three of the corners of a rectangle. One of the clamping jaws is mounted on a holder reciprocably mounted on the lower die shoe and the other jaw is mounted on a second holder reciprocably mounted on the first holder. The mounting for the cutoff block provides for either of two rigidly located positions, for different tubing sizes, and the scarfing blade is also adjustable.

Universal double cut die set

A cut-off die set is disclosed for use in a cut-off apparatus of the type in which continuous length of tubing or other elongated stock emanating from a tubing mill is severed into lengths as the tubing emanates from the tubing mill by means of a cut-off die set mounted within the cut-off apparatus. The cut-off die set is adapted to be clamped to the tube so as to move therewith during severing of the tubing by a ram operated cut-off blade descending vertically to shear the tubing. The present disclosure involves a improvement to a notching mechanism often included in such cut-off apparatus in which a horizontally reciprocated blade notches the upper portion of the tubing just prior to severing by the main cut-off blade so as to eliminate dimples in the severed tube cross section. The improvement lies in a different timing of the movement of the notching blade with respect to the motion of the main blade, coupled with a different configuration thereof, the improved notching mechanism consisting of a notching blade having a hook shaped cutting edge which is pulled from an initial position extending over the tube across the upper portion of the tubing in order to notch the same, with the notching blade returning to its initial position after severing by passing through the opening in the tube created by the main cut-off blade. This drastically reduces the velocity of the notching blade operating mechanism, improving wear on the blade and other movement parts as well as reducing the loads on the operating mechanism. In addition it eliminates the blade drag normally associated with withdrawal of the notching blade prior to severing of the tubing section as occurs in conventional designs.

An I-beam section traveling from the apparatus in which it is fabricated is cut on the fly by a die set or shear which is moved with the I-beam. The cut is effected by a stepped blade having a leading cutting edge and a trailing cutting edge, the latter being in the same plane but laterally offset from the former. The cut proceeds at a 45.degree. angle to the plane of the web and flanges. The leading edge enters the I-beam at the middle of the web and cuts the remainder of the web and the lower flange. The trailing blade edge engages the margin of the upper flange and cuts through this flange and the remainder of the web. The cutting blade is mounted on a reciprocable upper shoe and the I-beam is fed through structure mounted on the lower shoe which has an opening for the I-beam to pass with considerable clearance. Inserts mounted on the lower shoe underlie the web and flanges of the I-beam to support the beam during the cut. Known apparatus may be used to accelerate the die set into synchronizm with the moving workpiece and to reciprocate the upper member for the cutting stroke.

Die set for cutting I-beam

A tube cutoff apparatus of the shear knife type is provided with an improved knife holder to reduce the likelihood of fracture. The knife holder and the tube clamping jaws are formed to provide a nesting relationship at the full cut position which increases the blade penetration depth without sacrificing blade support.
