A lubricating oil composition is disclosed comprising at least 10% by weight of the total oil composition of an ester of phthalic acid having a viscosity index less than 100. The lubricating oil composition has improved fuel economy and wear performance.

Oil compositions with synthetic base oils

A lubricating oil composition which exhibits improved fuel economy and fuel economy retention which contains the combination of an overbased oil soluble calcium detergent additive and an oil soluble trinuclear friction modifying molybdenum compound, the two components functioning to provide an improvement in the friction reducing properties of the composition.

Lubricating oil having improved fuel economy retention properties

A lubricating oil composition comprising oil, and an additive combination comprising a poly alpha-olefin polymer dispersant with a number average molecular weight above 2500, and a metal dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate sufficient to yield a phosphorous content of up to 0.1 percent weight based on the total weight of the oil. The poly alpha-olefin polymer can be ethylene alpha-olefin copolymer such as ethylene-1-butene or ethylene-1-butene-hydrocarbyl polyamine. Preferably, the ethylene-1-butene-hydrocarbyl polyamine has a number average molecular weight of about 3300.

Wear control with dispersants employing poly alpha-olefin polymers

There are disclosed antioxidant additives for lubricating oils which exhibit reduced phosphorus volatility, the additives being sodium, potassium, lithium or oil soluble amine salts of a dialkyldithiophosphoric acid prepared by reacting P.sub.2 S.sub.5 with a mixture of alcohols consisting of (a) a polyol of the formula R(OH).sub.n where R is a C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 hydrocarbyl group and n is 2-10 and (b) an aliphatic monohydric alcohol having 3-18 carbon atoms, the mixture containing relative amounts of polyol and monohydric alcohol such that 50 mole % of the total OH groups are OH groups of the polyol.

Alkylthiophosphate salts for lubricating oils

A lubricating oil composition which exhibits improved fuel economy and fuel economy retention which contains the combination of (a) a dithiocarbamate of the formula R.sub.1 (R.sub.2)N--C(:S)--S--(CH.sub.2).sub.n --S--(:S)C--N(R.sub.2)R.sub.1 where n is 1-4 and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl and (b) an oil soluble trinuclear friction modifying molybdenum compound, the two components functioning to provide an improvement in the friction reducing properties of the composition.

A low phosphorus passenger car motor oil containing an oil of lubricating viscosity as the major component and a tri-metal detergent mixture as a minor component, wherein the tri-metal detergent mixture comprises at least one calcium overbased metal detergent, at least one magnesium overbased metal detergent and at least one sodium overbased metal detergent, wherein the tri-metal detergent mixture is present in the oil composition in an amount such that the total TBN contributed to the oil composition by the tri-metal detergent mixture is from about 2 to about 12, and wherein the calcium overbased detergent contributes from about 8 to about 42% of the total TBN contributed by the tri-metal detergent mixture, the magnesium overbased detergent contributes from about 29 to about 60% of the total TBN contributed by the tri-metal detergent mixture, and the sodium overbased detergent contributes from about 15 to about 64% of the total TBN contributed by the tri-metal detergent mixture.
