Ion trap with elongated electrodes

A mass spectrometer comprises: a first ion optical device in a relatively low gas pressure region; a second ion optical device in a relatively high gas pressure region, the first and second ion optical devices receiving respective RF voltages from respective RF power supplies for generating respective RF fields that confine ions in respective trapping regions of the ion optical devices; and a gas conductance restriction, restricting gas flow from the relatively high gas pressure region to the relatively low gas pressure region, the gas conductance restriction having an aperture to allow ions to pass from the second to the first ion optical device. The first and second RF power supplies are independent to allow the RF voltages for generating the first RF field to have a different amplitude from the RF voltages for generating the second RF field.

Ion transport between ion optical devices at different gas pressures

An ion mobility analyser comprising an ion guide is provided. The ion guide defines an ion drift channel extending in an axial direction an includes first and second electrode assemblies provided on opposing sides of the ion drift channel. Each of the first and second electrode assemblies extend in the axial direction and in a transverse direction which is transverse to the axial direction. The first and second electrode assemblies are spaced apart on opposing sides of the ion drift channel by a first distance at a narrowest point along the axial direction. Each of the first and second electrode assemblies comprises a set of first electrodes, and a set of second electrodes. The electrodes in the first and second sets are arranged in an alternating pattern in the transverse direction. The alternating pattern extends in the transverse direction a second distance that is greater than the first distance.

Ion mobility analyser

A method of operating an instrument which comprises a first and second ion stores, comprising determining whether a target accumulation time for the second ion store is greater than a threshold accumulation time. When the target accumulation time is less than the threshold accumulation time, ions are accumulated within the second ion store using an accumulation time that is based on the target accumulation time. When the target accumulation time is greater than the threshold accumulation time, ions are accumulated within the first ion store using a first accumulation time that is based on a difference between the target accumulation time and the threshold accumulation time, the ions accumulated in the first ion store are passed to the second ion store, and further ions are accumulated within the second ion store using a second accumulation time that is based on the threshold accumulation time.

Ion accumulation control for analytical instrument

A mass spectrometry method comprises: (a) introducing ions and gas into a first electrode section of an ion transport apparatus along an axis, the ion transport apparatus further comprising a second electrode section including: a plurality of stacked, mutually parallel ring or plate electrodes; and an ion outlet aperture configured to receive the ions from the second electrode section and to transfer the ions to the vacuum chamber; (b) providing only non-oscillatory voltages to electrodes of the first electrode section of the ion transport apparatus that divert motion of the ions away from that axis and towards an entrance aperture of the second electrode section; (c) transporting the ions through the second electrode section to and through the ion outlet aperture to the vacuum chamber; and (d) removing a major portion of the gas through an exhaust port that is offset from the ion outlet aperture.

Complemented ion funnel for mass spectrometer

Trapping ions in an ion trapping assembly is described. In one aspect, this is implemented by introducing ions into the ion trapping assembly, applying a first RF trapping amplitude to the ion trapping assembly so as to trap introduced ions which have m/z ratios within a first range of m/z ratios, and cooling the trapped ions. In some aspects, also performed is reducing the RF trapping amplitude from the first RF trapping amplitude to a second, lower, RF trapping amplitude so as to reduce the low mass cut-off of the ion trapping assembly and trapping, at the second, lower RF trapping amplitude, introduced ions having m/z ratios within a second range of m/z ratios. A lower mass limit of the second range of m/z ratios is below the low mass cut-off of the ion trapping assembly when the first RF trapping amplitude is applied.

Ion trapping scheme with improved mass range

An electrostatic ion trap or an array of electrostatic ion traps are provided having a longitudinal length of no more than 10 mm and/or at least one electrode with a capacitance to ground of no more than 1 pF. First and second sets of planar electrodes may be distributed along the longitudinal axis, at least some of the which are configured to receive an electrostatic potential for confinement of ions received in the space between the first and second sets of planar electrodes. An array may comprise an inlet for receiving an ion beam, configured such that a portion of the ion beam can be trapped in each of the ion traps. Signals indicative of ion mass and charge data may be obtained from multiple electrostatic ion traps in the array. This mass and charge data may be combined for identification of components of a mixture of different analyte ions.

Electrostatic ion trap configuration

Disclosed herein are systems for imaging and ablating a sample. An imaging/ablating device includes an optical assembly, a sample stage, and a receiver. The optical assembly enables ablation of a region of interest within the sample. The laser light propagated from the optical assembly during ablation propagates substantially in the same direction as the direction of travel of the ablation plume toward the receiver. A laser focus detection unit including at least one reference laser and photodetector generates at least one real-time detection signal indicative of one or more characteristics of the sample during ablation and/or of a distance from the objective to the sample stage or a surface of the sample. A controller coupled with the laser focus detection unit dynamically controls in real-time one or more parameters of the ablation laser and/or a position of the objective and/or a position of the receiver relative to the sample to improve MS imaging quality.

Systems and methods for imaging and ablating a sample

Method and system of mass spectrometry is provided. The method comprises performing a first and a second MS1 scans on precursor ions produced by ionising a sample. The first MS1 scan comprises mass analysing a first set of the precursor ions transported to a mass analyser using an ion transport device operated at a first setting. The second MS1 scan comprises mass analysing a second set of the precursor ions transported to a mass analyser using the ion transport device operated at a second setting. Energies imparted on the precursor ions by the ion transport device are different in the first and second settings. Based on intensities of mass spectral peaks of the first and second MS1 scans, a mass spectral peak in at least one of the first MS1 scan or the second MS1 scan indicative of a precursor ion mass spectral peak is determined.

Methods and apparatus for mass spectrometry

A method of processing two dimensional optical spectra, such as echelle spectra, is disclosed. The optical spectra comprise sections having a relatively high intensity separated by borders having a relatively low intensity. The optical spectra have been digitized () by a detector. The method comprises denoising () an optical spectrum, searching () for at least one series of neighboring local extrema of the optical spectrum, fitting () a line through each series of neighboring local extrema, each line representing a section, identifying () any peaks and their respective locations, and storing () the lines and the locations of any peaks.

Method and device for processing two-dimensional optical spectra

Provided herein are methods and systems for controlling the number of ions in a batch of ions accumulated in an ion trap. The ion trap comprises one or more detection electrodes configured to detect image current signals from ions accumulated within the ion trap. An ion or group of ions passed to the ion trap is caused to impact upon one or more of the detection electrode(s) of the ion trap so as to provide a detected signal. An ion current or charge of the ion or group of ions is determined from the detected signal, and the determined ion current or charge of the ion or group of ions is used to control the number of ions in a batch of ions subsequently accumulated in the ion trap.

Charge detection for ion accumulation control

Disclosed herein are systems for imaging and ablating a sample. An imaging/ablating device () includes an optical assembly (), a sample stage (), and a receiver (). The optical assembly () is disposed in an inverted position below the sample stage () and the receiver () is positioned above the sample stage (). The optical assembly enables imaging of a sample disposed on the sample stage (). The optical assembly () also enables ablation of a region of interest within the sample. The laser light propagated from the optical assembly during ablation propagates substantially in the same direction as the direction of travel of the ablation plume () toward the receiver ().

An ion guide may comprise a set of plate electrodes, each plate electrode having a plurality of apertures formed therethrough. The set of plate electrodes are spatially arranged such that a relative positioning of each plurality of apertures of a respective plate electrode of the set of plate electrodes and respective adjacent plate electrodes of the set of plate electrodes defines a continuous ion flight path through the respective plurality of apertures of each plate electrode of the set of plate electrodes. The continuous ion flight path has a helical-based and/or spiral-based shape.

Ion guide

Systems and method for the preparation and delivery of biological samples for charged particle analysis are disclosed herein. An example system at least includes an ion filter coupled to select a sample ion from an ionized sample supply, the ion filter including a quadrupole filter to select the sample ion from the sample supply, an energy reduction cell coupled to receive the selected sample ion and reduce a kinetic energy of the sample ion, a validation unit coupled to receive the sample ion and determine whether the sample ion is a target sample ion, a substrate coupled to receive the sample, wherein the substrate is electron transparent, an ion transport module coupled to receive the sample ion from the ion filter and transport the sample ion to the substrate, and an imaging system arranged to image, with a low energy charged particle beam, the sample located on the substrate, wherein the substrate is arranged in an analysis location. The imaging system including a charge particle emitter coupled to direct coherent charged particles toward the sample; and a detector arranged to detect interference patterns formed from interaction of the coherent charged particles and the sample.

System and method for preparation and delivery of biological samples for charged particle analysis

The present invention provides a mass spectrometer comprising a first ion trap, a second ion trap, a lens stack for directing ions from the first ion trap to the second ion trap and a housing. The first ion trap is arranged to form a linear or curved potential well and the second ion trap is an electrostatic ion trap, for example, an orbital ion trap, arranged to form an annular potential well. The mass spectrometer further comprises a unitary insert comprising a first cavity which holds the lens stack and a second cavity which holds the second ion trap, wherein the insert is inserted within the housing.
