A three-dimensional object printer comprises a platen, a gantry positioned above the platen, an ejector head positioned on the gantry, a sensor, and a controller. The controller is configured to operate the ejector to eject at least one drop of material toward the platen at an upper build level and determine process and cross-process differentials between a fiducial and the at least one drop of material deposited on the upper build surface. The controller is also configured to determine an ejector head shift in a process direction and a cross-process direction associated with each of the plurality of build levels based at least in part on the determined process and cross-process differentials and a number of build levels between the base build level and the upper build level.

Three-dimensional (3D) object printing system that compensates for misregistration

A thermal printhead (TPH) is positioned to selectively preheat a blanket surface such as an arbitrarily reimageable surface of a variable lithography system. The blanket then immediately passes through a chamber containing dampening solution vapor. The vapor condenses only where the blanket has not been heated, thus developing an image ready for inking.

A method for calibrating in situ a plurality of printheads in an imaging device has been developed. Firing signals operate a plurality of printheads to form ink test patterns on an image receiving member. Reflectance measurements of light reflected from the test patterns and optical density measurements for a portion of the patterns formed by only one printhead in the plurality of printheads are used to adjust the firing signals and enable the printheads to print within a predetermined range about an average reflectance value and a predetermined optical density.

A system and method for measuring a substrate edge signal for image sensor phasing. An intermediate transfer substrate edge signal can be effectively mapped by a substrate edge sensor and recorded for at least one complete revolution. A substrate edge signal from an inter-document zone sampled from any region of a substrate in runtime by a process sensor can also be recorded. A comparison or cross-correlation can be applied between the bare intermediate transfer substrate edge signal and the substrate edge signal sensed in the inter-document zone. A cross-correlation algorithm returns a maximum peak value when the two signals are registered in-phase with one another. This information can then be used to register the bare belt process sensor signal and the process sensor signal over the region of interest in-phase with one another. A flat-fielding algorithm can also be applied to the phase-aligned process sensor data to remove artifacts and compensate for substrate (e.g., belt) induced non-uniformities.

System and method for sensor phasing using a substrate edge signal

A composite resinold/graphite/diamond blade is described having enhanced precision cutting properties. The blade is made by assembling several layers, each layer comprising a veil of non-woven graphite fabric impregnated with a mixture of diamond particles blended into a phenolic resin. Layers are built up in sandwich fashion. In one embodiment described, four layers are formed and, in a heating compression molding operation, the sandwich is compressed into a composite blade having a diameter of 4.7 inches with a thickness of 0.011 inch. The final blade is formed by a die cut and lapping process. The layered construction yields a blade with more consistent cross-section and improves blade wear symmetry. In another embodiment, the layers are tailored to have a grit concentration of the diamond/resin mixture at the periphery or cutting edge.
