A heat exchanger comprises at least one tube or plate pair defining a fluid flow passage which is reduced in height across a portion of its width. A turbulizer comprising a plurality of rows of convolutions is received inside the fluid flow passage in either the low pressure drop or high pressure drop orientation. The turbulizer includes convolutions of reduced height in order to at least partially fill the reduced-height portions of the fluid flow passage and thereby reduce bypass flow. In some preferred embodiments of the invention, heat exchanger tubes or plate pairs define fluid flow passages which are reduced in height along their edges, and the turbulizer is similarly reduced in height along its edges.

Heat exchangers with turbulizers having convolutions of varied height

A heat exchanger is disclosed having a plurality of stacked plate pairs or tubes, each having a predetermined internal cold flow resistance. A bypass conduit is included in the stack of plate pairs or tubes. The bypass conduit includes a central row of spaced-apart, mating dimples defining longitudinal flow channels on either side of the dimples for bypass flow through the bypass conduit under cold flow conditions. The longitudinal flow channels have a height and width such that the cold flow resistance therethrough is less than the cold flow resistance through the stacked plate pairs or tubes. In normal or hot flow conditions, the dimples create flow resistance by forcing the fluid flowing through the bypass conduit to change velocity and direction. This forces more oil to flow through the stacked plate pairs or tubes increasing heat transfer performance.

A heat exchanger is disclosed having a plurality of stacked plate pairs with a core thickness of less than 25 mm. Each plate of a plate pair has asymmetrically arranged parallel ribs disposed at an oblique angle of less than 32 degrees to provide two point contact between the ribs on adjacent plate pairs.

An automotive vehicle cooling system having a radiator connected to the engine coolant jacket for circulation of coolant, a pump delivering coolant from the radiator to the engine, a non-pressurized reservoir bottle communicating with the radiator and having a make-up line communicating with a venturi in a recirculating line around the pump directing coolant from the pump outlet to the pump inlet. The venturi allows make-up coolant to be added from the reservoir bottle at atmospheric pressure so that the bottle can be of a relatively lightweight gauge material.

Automotive cooling system using a non-pressurized reservoir bottle

A heat exchanger utilizing a tube and fin core or a plate-fin separator wherein a plurality of tubes or plates are arranged in one or more rows with either corrugated fins between the tubes or a stack of horizontal split plate fins have openings receiving the tubes. The fins overhang the row or rows of tubes at the leading and/or trailing edges and have louvres formed therein, with the louvres in the overhanging portion being progressively shortened from the outer edge of the fin. In addition, the louvre at the leading and/or trailing edge of the fin is oriented substantially parallel to the fin surface and the direction of bulk air flow through the core.

A deaeration system for a cross-flow radiator requiring continuous deaeration utilized with an internal combustion engine, wherein the radiator includes a vertical inlet tank and a vertical outlet tank connected by a tube and fin core. A generally vertical baffle divides the outlet tank into two compartments, one of which functions as a receiver tank for the core while the other compartment functions as a reservoir tank having a filler neck for a cap and pressure relief valve communicating therewith, and the radiator fluid outlet communicates with the reservoir tank adjacent the bottom thereof.
