An interactive globe device may include a base, a spherical globe rotatable around an axle mounted to the base, and a stylus for selecting locations on the spherical globe. The base may include an integrated display, and control buttons for switching the operating mode of the interactive globe device. The spherical globe may have dot patterns printed on its surface, and the stylus may include an optical sensor configured to detect the dot patterns on the spherical globe as locations being selected by the user. The interactive globe device may also include a processor to dynamically adjust mapping of the dot patterns into different regions based on the operating mode of the interactive globe device, determine which of the regions for the operating mode corresponds to a dot pattern detected by the stylus, and render interactive content on the integrated display based on the determined region.

Once embodiment of the invention is directed to a method comprising receiving, at a computing device, image data from a camera, converting, by the computing device, the image data to a YUV color space, filtering, by the computing device, the converted image data based on intensity and a predetermined color to produce a filtered image, and determining, by the computing device, a location of light emitted from a controller from the filtered image.

A learning apparatus can electronically provide content to a user via a display on the learning apparatus. The content can include stationary image elements and removable image elements at a plurality of locations on the display. When a user shakes the learning apparatus, the removable image elements may move away from the plurality of locations. The user can then select one or more image elements, and place them at locations on the display.

One embodiment of the invention is directed to a method comprising electronically providing content to a user via a display on a learning apparatus wherein the content comprises a plurality of stationary image elements and a plurality of removable image elements at a plurality of locations on the display, detecting when a user shakes the learning apparatus, wherein the removable image elements move away from the plurality of locations, receiving an indication that one or more of the image elements has been selected by a user, and determining a location of placement of the one or more image elements by the user.
