A process comprising reacting, in a reactor having a fixed bed containing a solid catalyst which contains a zeolite, hydrogen sulfide and an oxirane in the presence of the solid catalyst to yield a reaction product with contains a mercapto-alcohol. A reactor system includes the reactor, an oxirane feed stream, a hydrogen sulfide feed stream, a fixed bed containing the solid catalyst placed inside the reactor, and an effluent stream containing the reaction product. The hydrogen sulfide and the oxirane are present in a mole ratio in a range of about 5:1 to 50:1.

2-mercaptoethanol synthesis

A process includes reacting, in a reactor having a fixed bed containing a solid catalyst which contains a heterogeneous ion exchange resin, hydrogen sulfide and ethylene oxide in the presence of the solid catalyst to yield a reaction product which contains beta-mercaptoethanol. A reactor system includes the reactor, an ethylene oxide stream, a hydrogen sulfide stream, a fixed bed containing the solid catalyst placed in the reactor, and an effluent stream containing the reaction product. During steady state operation of the reactor in the process and the reactor system, the hydrogen sulfide and the ethylene oxide are present in a mole ratio in a range of about 9:1 to about 20:1.

Beta-mercaptoethanol synthesis

The present invention discloses a hydrogen sulfide reactor vessel with an external heating system that is conductively and removably attached to an exterior portion of the reactor vessel. Also disclosed are processes for producing hydrogen sulfide utilizing the reactor vessel.

Hydrogen sulfide production process and related reactor vessels

In a process to make dithiodiglycol by oxidation of &#x3b2;-mercaptoethanol with sulfur, an improved product is recovered when a 1-10 mol % excess of &#x3b2;-mercaptoethanol is used and hydrogen sulfide is removed by vacuum or nitrogen sparge. A typical product contains 88.1 mol % (92.0 wt %) dithiodiglycol, 2.3 mol % (2.9 wt %) trithiodiglycol and 9.6 mol % (5.1 wt %) unreacted &#x3b2;-mercaptoethanol. Reaction of this product with 35 to 50 wt % solution hydrogen peroxide reduces residual &#x3b2;-mercaptoethanol to less than 0.02 wt % mercaptan. Residual water of about 3.6 wt % after hydrogen peroxide treatment is reduced to less than 1 wt % by vacuum stripping and/or nitrogen sparge or with a wiped film evaporator.

Production of dithiodiglycol

A process which can be used for producing an organic disulfide is provided. The process comprises the steps of: (1) contacting a base and a mercaptan under an effective condition for forming a brine phase comprising the base and a basic salt of a mercaptan; (2) contacting the brine phase with a mercaptan and hydrogen peroxide under a condition sufficient to effect the formation of an aqueous phase and an organic phase; (3) separating the aqueous phase from the organic phase; (4) recovering the organic phase; and optionally, (5) removing a portion of water from the aqueous phase and thereafter repeating the steps of (2) to (5).
