A technique includes monitoring a sequence of bits of data communicated to a transmitter of a node, where the transmitter communicates signals with a bus in response to the sequence of bits. The technique includes determining whether the sequence of bits represents acknowledgement by the node that data was received from the bus in an associated data frame and represents detection by the node of an error associated with the data frame. The technique includes detecting a fault associated with the bus based on the result of the determination.

The methods involve generating a first type of bi-directional message in a first propagation mode, generating a second type of bi-directional message in the first propagation mode and in a second propagation mode, transmitting over a cable operatively coupling a surface modem and a downhole modem the first and second types of bi-directional message sequentially in a plurality of time periods across a single frequency bandwidth, and separating each of the first and second types of bi-directional message from a most subsequently transmitted one of the first and second types of bi-directional message by a quiet time sample during which no message is transmitted.

Example implementations relate to virtualizing fan speed. For example, a system for virtualizing fan speed may include a server enclosure manager connected to a controller area network (CAN) bus, the server enclosure manager to regulate a speed of a fan in a server blade enclosure; and a CAN bus microcontroller connected to the CAN bus. The CAN bus microcontroller may receive a direct current (DC) voltage from an analog low-pass filter, determine a fan speed of the fan corresponding to the received DC voltage, and report the determined fan speed to the enclosure manager.

A technique includes receiving a first signal from a first bus, and receiving a second signal from a second bus. The first and second buses are used for redundant communications. The methods involve providing a system includes a cable operatively coupling between a surface modem and a downhole modem that is operatively coupled to a downhole toolstring of one or more downhole tools via a toolbus. The methods further involve generating a plurality of test signals, sequentially applying the test signals across one or more test loops in the cable telemetry system, and generating a failure point alert when at least one of the test signals fails in at least one of the test loops. The failure point alert identifies which component of the cable telemetry system caused the test signal to fail.

A method and system for determining an active management uplink including adjusting a bridge priority value, based on connectivity conditions, to lower the value of a bridge ID stored in a memory region of a network module. The method and system to also identify a network module as a root network module if it has a lower bridge ID than all other stacked network modules. The bridge ID of a network module may be based on the bridge priority value and a MAC address stored in a memory region of the network module. The system and method to also enable the management uplink port of the root network module to actively manage data between the management network and other stacked network modules.

Systems and methods for toolstring communication in cable telemetry. The methods involve positioning a cable telemetry system in a wellbore. The cable telemetry system can include a surface modem, a downhole toolstring of downhole tools, a downhole modem operatively coupled to the downhole toolstring, a cable operatively coupling between the surface modem and the downhole modem, and a surface data routing module that polls and trains the cable telemetry system. The methods also involve performing a pre-transmission poll of a rate requirement for the downhole toolstring and a telemetry type for the downhole modem, applying a training phase to establish a transmission link between the surface modem and the downhole modem, configuring data obtained by the downhole toolstring for an uplink via the transmission link, and transmitting the uplink via the transmission link.
