An optical arrangement receives output light emanating from an object disposed within a fluid column that crosses an optical refraction boundary of the fluid column between the object and the optical arrangement. The optical arrangement modifies the output light such that the modified output light has an intensity that is more uniform than the output light.

Light collection from objects within a fluid column

A digital loupe system is provided which can include a number of features. In one embodiment, the digital loupe system can include a stereo camera pair and a distance sensor. The system can further include a processor configured to perform a transformation to image signals from the stereo camera pair based on a distance measurement from the distance sensor and from camera calibration information. In some examples, the system can use the depth information and the calibration information to correct for parallax between the cameras to provide a multi-channel image. Ergonomic head mounting systems are also provided. In some implementations, the head mounting systems can be configurable to support the weight of a digital loupe system, including placing one or two oculars in a line of sight with an eye of a user, while improving overall ergonomics, including peripheral vision, comfort, stability, and adjustability. Methods of use are also provided.

A method of operating a hyperspectral imaging device includes connecting electrodes on a liquid crystal variable retarder to a voltage source, rotating liquid crystal material in the liquid crystal variable retarder between a first orientation with a certain optical phase delay and a second orientation with a different optical phase delay, receiving a beam of light at an image sensor that has passed through the liquid crystal variable retarder, and producing an output signal from the image sensor.

Liquid crystal fourier transform imaging spectrometer

A system comprises an imaging device that includes a two dimensional array of pixels. Each pixel of the array includes a first optical filter having a first pass band arranged to filter excitation light reflected by a moving object and a first detector configured to detect light transmitted through the first optical filter and to generate a first electrical signal. Each pixel of the array also includes a second optical filter having a second pass band arranged to filter excitation light reflected by a moving object and a second detector configured to detect light transmitted through the second optical filter and to generate a second electrical signal. The imaging device further includes circuitry that generates output signals from each of the pixels based on the first electrical signal and the second electrical signal of the pixel. The output signal includes information about the speed and direction of the moving object.

An exit-pupil expander is optically coupled to the liquid-crystal variable retarder, the exit-pupil expander includes: at least one optical input feature that receives reference light from a reference light source; and one or more optical coupling elements coupled to receive the reference light from the reference light source and expand the reference light to one or more spatially-separated regions of the liquid-crystal variable retarder.

A medical system comprising a hand-held imaging device comprising optical components including a light source to illuminate an area of medical interest, a liquid crystal variable retarder to receive light from the area of medical interest, and a retardance controller to provide a driving waveform to the variable retarder that controls retardance. The device also includes an image sensor configured to receive light from the variable retarder and to convert the received light into an output voltage signal for either the camera operation or the hyperspectral imaging operation, and communication circuitry configured to communicate imaging information based on the output voltage signal to a medical diagnostic system. The hand-held imaging device is configured to switchably perform a hyperspectral imaging and a camera operation such that the operations share at least one optical component. The diagnostic device is configured to receive the imaging information and to provide diagnostic information based thereon.

An optical device includes a first transparent substrate having a first transparent electrode disposed on a surface of the first transparent substrate and a second substrate having a second electrode disposed on a surface of the second substrate and facing the first transparent electrode. A liquid-crystal (LC) material is sandwiched between the first and second electrodes such that a voltage applied between the first and second electrodes controls orientation of the liquid-crystal material. The device includes a control system that applies a current through at least one electrode of the first and second electrodes to resistively heat the LC material.

A hyperspectral imaging system has a processor to receive hyperspectral imaging parameters and produce a series of images to be acquired at a series of retardances at a series of retardance times, a hyperspectral imaging component having an input polarizer to polarize an incoming beam of light, a liquid crystal variable retarder to receive the polarized beam of light and to produce wavelength-dependent polarized light, an output polarizer to receive the wavelength-dependent polarized light and to convert polarization state information into a form detectable as light intensity, a voltage source connected to the liquid crystal variable retarder, and a retardance controller. The retardance controller receives the series of retardances at a series of retardance times and produces a series of voltages at a series of voltage times to apply to the liquid crystal variable retarder. A focal plane array, synchronized with the retardance controller, receives the light in a form detectable as light intensity and converts the light to a series of images.
