The sharing of trunk groups is accomplished by performing incoming call routing analysis on the incoming call to determine if the call is intended for wireless applications on the network or for wireline applications on the network. The results of the incoming call routing analysis form the basis for determining those actions necessary to process the call. If the incoming call is wireless, executing the wireless related application code, notify the mobile switching center of the incoming call, and wait for directions. If the incoming call in wireline, attempting to deliver the call to a particular wireline, fire an advanced intelligent network (AIN) terminating trigger, and tandem the call through to another switch. Outgoing calls are simply allowed to hunt across shared trunk groups rather than being limited to trunk groups specified for the application.

Method and apparatus for tracking truck groups between wireless and wireline applications

A system and method that provides control of a conference call. A controlling party enters a code and is isolated from the conference. Each conference participant is sequentially connected to the controlling party so that the controlling party may determine the noise level on that leg of the call. If there is no excess noise, then the controlling party may enter a code which causes the switch to select the next party on the conference call. When the controlling party discerns the offending conference participant, the controlling party can signal the switch to drop the offending party. The controlling party may then rejoin all of the conference participants.

System and method for controlling a conference call

A network mute feature deployed in a wireless telecommunications system allows a mobile user to eliminate ambient environmental and wireless transmission noise. Upon activation of the network mute feature, a voice path interconnecting the mobile unit to a party served by the public switched telephone network (PSTN) is opened. A portion of the open voice path is subsequently interconnected to a noise generator so that the PSTN party hears unobtrusive background noise indicating that the mobile user is still &ldquo;on the line&rdquo; and can hear transmissions by the party. The PSTN party, however, cannot hear noises associated with mobile user's environment or wireless transmission while the network mute feature is activated. Advantageously, the network mute feature enhances the ability of mobile users to participate in calls in which the quality of transmission (e.g., a conference call) is important.

Network mute feature in wireless telecommunications systems

A mobile unit deployed in a wireless telecommunications system includes a network mute feature. Activation of the network mute feature initiates a signaling protocol in which a network mute activation request is extended by the mobile unit to a serving base station. Deactivation of the network mute feature also requires the mobile unit to generate a signal which is extended to the serving base station. Advantageously, the network mute feature not only mutes the microphone of the mobile unit but also eliminates disruptive noise associated with wireless transmissions.

Mobile unit for accommodating network mute feature in wireless telecommunications systems

A system and method, associated with a wireless base station system ('BSS') coupled to a mobile service center ('MSC') via a plurality of trunk lines, that allow the BSS to hunt the plurality of trunk lines for available channels to carry calls from the BSS to the MSC and a Groupe Speciale Mobile ('GSM') wireless infrastructure employing the system or the method. The system includes: (1) a signaling controller, associated with the BSS, that sends a command signal to the MSC to cause the MSC to bypass hunting for the available channels, the MSC acknowledging bypassing of the hunting to the signaling controller and (2) a trunk hunting controller, associated with the BSS, that is enabled when the MSC acknowledges the bypassing of the hunting to allow the BSS to hunt the plurality of trunk lines for the available channels to carry the calls from the BSS to the MSC, the trunk hunting controller capable of utilizing the trunk lines more efficiently than the MSC.

System and method for hunting trunk lines with a GSM wireless base

An enhanced Time Slot Interchange (TSI) facility, in addition to serving synchronous channels of communication, decomposes and composes asynchronous data cells to provide real-time communication among and between both synchronous and asynchronous channels served by a network access switch. An asynchronous cell comprises a 5 byte header and a 48 byte payload. The payload comprises voice samples from a temporarily defined set of DSO facilities and/or data from a variety of data facilities. Time slots of the TSI are temporarily assigned to the payload bytes of each incoming asynchronous cell; the payload bytes are stored in memory locations corresponding to those time slots; and the stored data is read out during time slots assigned to the destination channels of communication. The TSI comprises three data rams to accommodate for frame to frame jitter in the time of arrival of payload samples. Asynchronous cells are composed by transferring stored voice samples and data bytes to an asynchronous link during the times slots which are currently assigned to bytes of the composed cell payload. The header for outgoing asynchronous cells is inserted by a message handler.

Communication switch

A method for providing narrowband-related service features to subscribing broadband lines comprises establishing a composite voice path interconnecting a narrowband server and the subscribing broadband line via a broadband switching fabric. Particularly, a call set-up signal is received in a broadband call processor, converted to narrowband signaling format and extended to a designated narrowband server. Responsive to receipt of the call set-up signal, the designated narrowband server establishes a narrowband voice path interconnecting a narrowband network element to a synchronous-asynchronous converter. Subsequently, the broadband call processor establishes a broadband segment interconnecting the subscribing broadband line with the synchronous-asynchronous converter. The broadband segment corresponds to the narrowband voice path to form a composite voice path. The composite voice path is used by the designated narrowband server to provide narrowband-related service features to the subscribing broadband line. After a call in which narrowband-related features may be invoked has been disconnected, the composite voice path is released.

Each cell carries one PCM sample of up to 48 different voice connections, the voice connections being selected from the PCM data streams because they have a common destination. The cells are transmitted over ATM virtual paths, each path transmitting one cell every 125 .mu.s. The ATM signals are switched by units for switching cells (cell switching), while keeping their payload contents intact, and by units for switching the signals for individual voice connections between cells of an ATM signal (cell remapping). Advantageously, ATM transmission systems interface with PCM systems without adding appreciable delay and without requiring additional buffering. Advantageously, new voice paths can be established most of the time by using available slots in the cells of existing virtual paths. Advantageously, large telecommunication networks can be implemented using a small number of switching units. Advantageously, an access switch comprising a cell mapping or distribution stage for assembling cells comprising PCM samples headed for a common output of the access switch are switched in a cell switch to a cell remap unit for collecting PCM samples headed for a common destination into individual cells of an ATM output stream, provides output signals that can be readily and efficiently switched by a transit network for distribution to other access switches of a large network.

Access switches for large ATM networks

Advantageously, ATM transmission systems interface with PCM systems without adding appreciable delay and without requiring additional buffering. Advantageously, new voice paths can be established most of the time by using available slots in the cells of existing virtual paths. Advantageously, large telecommunication networks can be implemented using a small number of switching units. For use with PCM switches, it is desirable to provide supervisory signals accompanying the PCM data. Advantageously, this arrangement permits supervisory signals to be passed within an access switch thus simplifying compatibility with existing switching systems.
