A mobile station downloading an object over a broadcast channel uses a repair service to obtain data that was received in error during the original broadcast. The mobile station sets a repair threshold for the download object and invokes repair if the amount of errors is less than the repair threshold. If the amount of errors exceeds the repair threshold, the mobile station treats the download attempt as having failed and may send a new request if download is still desired.

Repair function for a broadcast service

An error detection unit performs erasure decoding for physical layer packets and an assembler assembles the received data into higher layer packets. Higher layer packets that are incomplete are not erased if the higher layer packets contain some data indicated as valid by the error detection unit. In the case of incomplete packets, the data is labeled by assigning a value to a reliability attribute for the data to enable the decoder to discriminate between valid and invalid data in the same packet. The decoder is modified to use 'dimmed' data from the incomplete packets to perform decoding.

Forward error correction for broadcast/multicast service

A method for controlling temperature-related transmissions in radiocommunication systems. A mobile station includes a measuring device for determining operating temperature. When the measured temperature exceeds a predetermined threshold temperature, the mobile station can reduce its transmission rate, thereby reducing power dissipation within the device. The mobile station informs the system of the rate reduction, whereby the system can reallocate released resources, e.g., timeslots and/or spreading codes. The mobile station can also inform the user of the change in transmission rates and/or the temperature of the mobile station, whereupon the user can move to a better transmitting location. The mobile station can also take into account the transmit status of the current connection in determining when to reduce the transmission rate.

Methods for cryptographic synchronization of data packets. A roll-over counter (ROC) value is periodically appended to and transmitted with a data packet when a function of the packet sequence number equals a predetermined value. The ROC effectively synchronizes the cryptographic transformation of the data packets. Although the disclosed methods are generally applicable to many transmission protocols, they are particularly adaptable for use in systems wherein the data packets are transmitted to a receiver using the Secure Real-Time Transport Protocol (SRTP) as defined in Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Request for Comments (RFC) 3711.

Methods and systems for multiplexing of multiple users for enhanced capacity radiocommunications

A signal representing variably coded information, i.e., information that is coded according to a code selected from a set of codes, is received at a first station. The received signal is decoding according to respective codes of the set of codes to generate respective likelihood metrics associated with respective codes of the set of codes. A code is selected from the set of codes based on the respective likelihood metrics, wherein the selection of the code from the set of codes is biased based on a prior communication between the first station and a second station that transmitted the signal. The received signal is the decoded according to the selected code to generate an estimate of the information. According to another embodiment, a signal representing a first variably code field and a second field that indicates the code applied to the first field, is received and processed to generate an estimate of the second field. Based on a confidence in the generated estimate of the second field, the receiving station either identifies the code applied to the first field based solely on the generated estimate of the second field, or identifies the code applied to the first field based on the generated estimate of the second field and respective likelihood metrics associated with decoding the received signal according to respective codes of the set of codes. In still another embodiment, an extent to which to partially decode a received variably coded signal to identify the code applied to the signal is determined based on a prior communication between the receiving station and a station that transmitted the signal.

Methods and apparatus for decoding variably-coded signals based on prior communication

The present invention relates to a mobile station capable of determining its current location within a wireless communication system. The mobile station periodically generates an estimate of its current location or mobility and then monitors channels for channel selection based thereon in order to minimize frame stealing while in active mode and save energy during idle mode. The same information is also useful for determining which cells to monitor and controlling how frequently position or changes of position estimates are made. Although the invention requires a determination of the mobile station's position or mobility, the manner in which the mobile station determines these characteristics may vary. A separate positioning receiver, terrestrial or satellite based, such as that used with the Global Positioning System, may allow the mobile station to calculate its position. Alternatively, the mobile station may monitor signals provided during communications with the base stations to calculate a relative position. In yet another embodiment, the base stations and associated cellular systems may cooperate to determine a particular mobile station's position and then download the position to the mobile station.

System and method for improving channel monitoring in a cellular system

A communication system includes a politeness zone (PZ); a wireless communication device configured to receive incoming communications over a first communication channel and politeness requests over a second communication channel, the communication device comprising an alerting mechanism configured to indicate receipt of an incoming communication over the first communication channel, the alerting mechanism operable in a politeness mode and a non-politeness mode, the politeness requests indicating that operation of the alerting mechanism should be set to politeness mode, wherein, upon receipt of a politeness request over the second communication channel, the device is configured to accept the politeness request and set operation of the alerting mechanism to politeness mode, or to reject the politeness request and leave operation of the alerting mechanism in its present mode of operation; and a politeness zone transmitter (PZT) configured to send politeness requests to the communication device over the second communication channel when the communication device is proximate the PZ.

A mobile terminal includes a primary transceiver to communicate with a mobile communication network and a secondary transceiver to communicate with a base unit of a cordless telephone system. When the mobile terminal is out of range of the base unit, it searches or listens for the base unit at a predetermined searching or listening frequency. The searching or listening frequency is dependent upon the distance of the mobile terminal from the base unit. A threshold is also established beyond which the mobile terminal may discontinue searching or listening for the base unit to conserve battery power or, alternatively, set the searching or listening frequency to a minimum value.

Emergency call handling may, in the near future, require terminal unit location information to be provided to emergency service centers. Exemplary embodiments of the present invention provide techniques which provide for interaction between an adjunct system whose primary function is to provide terminal unit location information and the radiocommunication system. For example, the location information generated by the adjunct system can be used by the radiocommunication system for other purposes, e.g., dynamic channel allocation.

A paging attribute descriptor (PAD) the indicates content of a page message is transmitted in a first time slot and/or a succeeding second time slot of a physical channel, and the page message is transmitted in the second time slot. The second slot may be, for example, a Digital Control Channel (DCCH) slot mapped on a physical channel (DTCH) of an IS-136 system. The transmitted PAD is recovered at wireless station, which then determines whether to recover the page message based on the recovered PAD, e.g., if the PAD indicates that the page message is an empty page message, a page message addressed to another wireless station or a page message that includes control information that has changed. For example, in an IS-136 compliant system, the PAD may be transmitted in the coded superframe phase (CSFP) field of a Paging Channel (PCH) message transmitted in a Digital Control Channel (DCCH) slot, or in reserved bits of a slot preceding a PCH message.

Wireless communications methods and apparatus employing paging attribute descriptors

A cell assignment process strives to minimize the number of cells assigned to mobile terminals involved in any given group call session in both circuit-switched and packet-data environments. In one embodiment, when a cell assignment trigger event is encountered during a group call, the decision whether to change cells or not is based at least in part upon whether the relevant cell is already participating in that group call session with another mobile terminal or not. If so, the cell assignment process preferentially selects such a cell for switching to or avoids changing cell assignment if already assigned there. In another embodiment other cells involved in the group call session are actively sought out and the cell assignments of the mobile terminals involved in the group call session are changed to those cells, even when the signal quality may be acceptable in the current cell. The mobile terminals involved in group call sessions may optionally be given preferential priority when switching cells so as to help minimize disruption to the group call session. Thus, the mobile terminals involved in the group call session are gradually urged toward congregating in the fewest possible cells under the circumstances. Accordingly, the present invention helps provide better service with less of a system capacity penalty for group call sessions.
