A prosthetic implant device for use in replacing the ball end of a biological joint, the replacement including a spherical head for insertion into a natural socket, an insert in the head, a ball-shaped member captured in the insert and having a neck and a stem for mounting the ball-shaped member on the end of the biological member on which the ball is being replaced, and a radially-expansible ring for capturing the ball-shaped member within the insert the ring having a downwardly and inwardly sloping outer wall and seated in a recess in the insert, the recess having upper and lower end walls for defining upper and lower limits of axial movement of the ring within the recess to permit selective removal of the ball-shaped member from the insert and to prevent inadvertent disengagement of the ball-shaped member from the insert.

A knee prosthesis in which articular surface areas of the engaged femoral and tibial components of the prosthesis include surface profile contours lying in a common arcuate profile defined by a medial-lateral radius having an origin lying on the mechanical axis passing through the femoral head of the corresponding hip joint such that limited misalignment of the femoral and tibial components by virtue of angular deviation from the mechanical axis resulting from relative displacement in a medial-lateral direction is tolerated to accommodate the misalignment while maintaining area engagement between the engaged surfaces.

An acetabular cup has a shell component with an outer surface including a frusto-conical surface portion and a spherical surface portion and an acetabulum is prepared with an inner surface including a frusto-conical surface portion and a spherical surface portion, the spherical surface portions having essentially the same radius and the frusto-conical surface portions having relative dimensions such that upon nesting of the spherical surface portions in contiguous relationship, the frusto-conical portions engage one another in an interference fit to secure the shell component within the prepared acetabulum.

An acetabular cup assembly includes a metal shell component and a plastic bearing insert capable of assembly interoperatively, the metal shell component first being secured in position within an acetabulum and then the plastic bearing insert being receivable within the shell component, first at a preliminary axial position for ascertainment of the circumferential position of the bearing insert and the orientation of the bearing face of the bearing insert relative to the shell component and then at a fully-seated axial position wherein the bearing insert is permanently captured in the shell component, the bearing insert being readily withdrawn from the preliminary axial position for circumferential repositioning to attain appropriate orientation of the bearing face prior to capturing the bearing insert within the shell component.
