A method for determining the position of a mobile radio telephone in a satellite communication system is disclosed. First, a mobile radio telephone scans a plurality of paging channels and measures the signal strength of the paging channels. The mobile radio telephone then selects the paging channel with the strongest signal strength and decodes the information broadcasted on the selected channel. The information contained in the paging channel can include frequencies or timeslots of paging channels in surrounding spot beams. The mobile station then measures the signal strength of paging channels in surrounding spot beams and quantizes the measurements to determine a coarse position of the mobile radio telephone.

Methods for carrying out an authentication check in a mobile telephone system in which an authentic base station serves a plurality of mobile stations. A prior method carried out a unidirectional check from the base to a calling mobile, permitting a false base to carry out a false authentication check by collecting a number of so-called RAND-Response pairs. To avoid this problem, another unidirectional, base-to-mobile, authentication check and an authentication check from the mobile to the base are carded out. In one embodiment, only the bi-directional authentication check is carried out.

A microcell base station may be provided with a receiver to listen on the umbrella cell control channel for messages, in addition to listening on its own control channel for control information and call accesses, to facilitate the appropriate assignment of a call to a cell. Also, a microcell can share a control channel with an umbrella cell provided interference between the control channels is not excessive. Further, microcells can share a common control channel independent of the overlying macrocell structure.

The present invention relates to systems and methods for allocating channels in a radiotelephone system wherein local estimation of interference for a potential new connection is achieved by measuring interference on the available downlink channels at a plurality of locations within a cell. The measurements can be made, for example, by already connected mobile stations, mobile stations which are not connected, fixed measurement stations or any combination thereof.

In a radiotelephone system, the control channel of each cell can be configured to broadcast absolute information about its cell and relative information about other cells including the characteristic of the cell. Further, the location of other control channels may also be included among the information broadcast over a control channel of a particular cell. A mobile telephony system includes an internal part-system, which is installed in a building and an external part-system. The internal part-system has internal base stations which are connected to a mobile switching center, to which external base stations are also connected. The mobile telephony system is assigned a frequency band which comprises a plurality of channels. The external part-system is divided into cells and has fixed channel assignment with a few channels to each external base stations. The internal part-system is adaptive and the internal base stations have access to all channels of the system. In order to determine whether a mobile station belongs to the internal or to the external part-system, an internal identification word is transmitted from the internal base stations and an external identification word is transmitted from the external base stations. When the signal strength of the internal identification word exceeds a threshold value, the mobile station transmits an internal identification word to the internal base stations. If the signal strength falls beneath this threshold value, the mobile station identifies itself to the external part-system.

A decoding system discriminates between different types of communications traffic signals. Each type of traffic signal is encoded using a different error correction code. Plural, parallel decoders each decode a received traffic signal using a different decoding technique. Each decoding technique operates in accordance with one of the error correction codes. A quantitative measurement of the reliability of a decoded result is generated by each decoder. A comparison processor accumulates the quantitative measurements made by each decoder and compares the accumulated values. That decoder having the most reliable, accumulated value is selected to decode the current traffic signals. The remaining decoders are deactivated to conserve processing time.

In a receiving circuit of a mobile telephone apparatus the incoming baseband signals are demodulated and equalized so as to compensate for deficiencies (multipath propagation) of the radio medium between base station and mobile telephone apparatus. It is not, however, always necessary to equalize the demodulated signals, for instance at low symbol rates or in the case of monopath propagation. According to the invention, time dispersion of the received signals is estimated prior to demodulation, and demodulation with equalization (3a) is effected when the time dispersion is established to be higher than a given value, whereas demodulation without equalization (3b) is effected when the time dispersion is lower than this value. This will enable the power consumed by the receiving circuit to be reduced, particularly in the listening mode of the apparatus.

Method of reducing the power requirements in a mobile radio receiver

A method in a mobile radio station to select one of a number of dedicated control channels (DCCH1-21) which are transmitted from a number of base stations (B1-B21) in a mobile radio system. In the mobile station there is an equalizer to compensate for the multipath propagation characteristics of the radio medium between the mobile station and a certain base station. This equalizer is power consuming and should not be used if not necessary. According to the method an investigation is carried out in the mobile station whether or not the equalizer can be disconnected during the initialization of a call from the mobile to a base station. The signal quality of the dedicated channel (DCCH1) which has the greatest signal strength is measured without the equalizer. If the signal quality is not acceptable, a new detection is made with the use of the equalizer. If the signal quality then is acceptable another detection is made without equalizer on the dedicated control channel (DCCH2) which has the next strongest signal and if this detection revealed an acceptable signal quality the base station (B2) transmitting this control channel is selected by the mobile station for the further call progress.

Method for reducing equalizer usage in mobile radio communication systems

A method in a mobile radiotelephone system in which an address is added to a symbol message in a control channel in order to exclude interfering connections operating on the same radio frequency as the actual connection between a base station and a mobile station. According to the proposed method, the address (A1) to the intended receiver is added to the message (M) and an error check word (E) is calculated based on both the address (A1) and the message (M). Before transmitting to the receiver, the added address is removed and the transmitted control signal includes only the symbol message (M) and the error check code (E). In the receiver, the specific address for the receiver is added to the received control signal and the same calculation is carried out as in the transmitter in order to get an accept/reject signal.

Method of processing a radio signal message

The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for controlling the frequency of a radio-receiver which receives signal-sequences which have been subjected to interference and which include a synchronizing-sequence and a data-sequence. A signal-sequence is converted into signal-points intended for analysis. A Viterbi-analyzer is adapted to the prevailing interferences with the aid of the synchronizing-sequence. The data-sequence is Viterbi-analyzed through a large number of calculating stages to determine the bit-sequence of the data-sequence. A bit-sequence is extracted during the Viterbi-analysis, with a time-delay, subsequent to effecting a few calculating stages, and a corresponding extracted signal-point is calculated. The analysis-intended signal-point corresponding to the extracted signal-point is divided, time-delayed, and phase-compared with the extracted signal-point. Corresponding phase-comparisons are made with respect to consecutive signal-points in the data-sequence, and the angular magnitudes obtained in the phase-comparison are low-pass filtered and integrated to form an angle-shift signal (V). The analysis-intended signal-points are displaced angularly by the angle-shift signal (V) prior to the Viterbi-analysis.

The invention relates to a cellular digital mobile radio system including base stations (B.sub.m, B.sub.n) and mobile stations (MS.sub.1, MS.sub.2) with transmitters and receivers. The invention also relates to a method of transmitting message information digitally between mobile and base stations in such a system. In accordance with the invention, at least two base station transmitters (B.sub.ma, B.sub.mb, B.sub.na, B.sub.nb) at a given transmitting distance from each other are assigned to each of certain cells (C.sub.m, C.sub.n) within a restricted geographical area. The base station transmitters which are assigned to the same cell transmit digitally modulated radio signals within the same frequency range at least partially simultaneously to the mobile stations of the cell. The radio signals from different base station transmitters associated with the same cell are digitally modulated with the same message information to the mobile stations in the cell. Different base station transmitters (9A, 9B) preferably transmit the digitally modulated radio signals with the same message information to a given mobile station with a given mutual transmission time shift. Here, the transmission time shift is selected individually for each mobile station, such that corresponding digitally modulated radio signals with the same message information to a given mobile station from different base station transmitters arrive practically simultaneously at the mobile station.

A method of reducing blockages and call interruption in handling over calls in a cellular mobile radio system. When the signal strength from a base station to a mobile and vice versa falls below a given value the handover shall take place to another base station. In order that the call will not be interrupted, a smaller number of channels are reserved, so-called rescue channels, from the ordinary channels in the system.
