A video display includes a display panel with gate drivers and source drivers. Each of said the source drivers is arranged to receive a discrete-time continuous-amplitude signal representing a video stream over a transmission medium and to decode the signal using demodulation to produce a plurality of samples for output on outputs of the source drivers. At least one of the source drivers is arranged to extract a gate driver timing control signal from the signal and to output the gate driver control signal to the gate drivers in order to synchronize the gate drivers with outputs of the source drives, whereby the video stream is displayed on the display panel of the display unit.

A video display unit includes a display panel with gate drivers and source drivers. Each of the source drivers receives an encoded analog signal representing a video stream over a transmission medium and decodes the signal to produce samples for output to the display. Gate driver control signals synchronize the gate drivers with the source drivers. The source drivers are integrated with the display panel glass in part or in whole. Amplifiers and level shifters of each source driver are implemented on the panel glass and the collector and decoder are not. Or, the amplifiers, shifters and collector are implemented on the panel glass and the decoder is not. Or, the amplifiers, shifters, collector and decoder of each source driver are implemented on the panel glass. The source drivers may drive a display of a mobile device. Thin-film transistors are used to implement the source drivers on glass.

The disclosed embodiments relate to lateral migration of particles in a totally internally reflective displays. In certain embodiments, the reflective image displays include partial and full walls to form partitions within the display. The walls mitigate diffusion and lateral migration or drift of electrophoretically mobile particles due to lateral electric fields at adjacent pixels. This improves image quality, bistability and long-term display performance.

A display apparatus comprises pixels () associated with intersections of select electrodes () and data electrodes () and having a bistable operation. A select driver () supplies select voltages (VG) to the select electrodes () to select a group of pixels (). A controller () controls the select driver (), the data driver () and the common driver (), in the order mentioned: (a) to change the select voltage (VG) to its on-level (on) at which the group of pixels () are selected, after the backplane voltage (VB) and the data voltage (VD) for the group of pixels () have a same first non-zero level (+15V), or before the backplane voltage (VB) and the data voltage (VD) for the group of pixels () are simultaneously changed to the same first non-zero level (+15V), (b) to change the data voltages (VD) in accordance with display data () defining an optical state of the individual pixels () of the group of pixels (), (c) to change the select voltage (VG) to its off-level (off) at which the group of pixels () are not selected, (d) to change the select voltage (VG) to its on-level (on), after the backplane voltage (VB) and the data voltage (VD) for the group of pixels () have a same second non-zero level (&#x2212;15V), or before the backplane voltage (VB) and the data voltage (VD) for the group of pixels () are simultaneously changed to the same second non-zero level (&#x2212;15V), and (e) to change the data voltages (VD) in accordance with the display data ().
