Provided are fluorinated block copolymers comprising alternating hard blocks and soft blocks, wherein both said hard and soft blocks comprise vinylidenfluoride (VDF). Also provided is the use of said block copolymers in applications for lithium batteries including an electrochemical cell and a separator for an electrochemical cell which is coated with a composition comprising the fluorinated block copolymers. Further provided is a process for the manufacture of the separator.

Fluorinated block copolymers and application thereof

The invention is directed to a barrier layer for corrosion protection in electrochemical devices, e.g. carbon based gas diffusion layers (GDLs) in electrochemical devices, comprising electrically conductive ceramic material and a non-ionomeric polymer binder. The electrically conductive ceramic material has an electrical conductivity of &#x3e;0.1 S/cm, preferably &#x3e;1 S/cm in air atmosphere (as detected by the powder method) and is selected from the group of precious metal and/or base metal containing oxides, carbides, nitrides, borides and mixtures and combinations thereof. Membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs), catalyst-coated membranes (CCMs), gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) and gas diffusion layers (GDLs) comprising the barrier layer of the invention show improved corrosion resistance, preferably against carbon corrosion; particularly in start-up/shut-down cycles and fuel starvation situations of PEM fuel cells.

The invention relates to a process for the isolation of (per)fluorinated polymers containing sulfonyl fluoride functional groups from a polymerization latex. The process comprises adding the polymerization latex to an aqueous electrolyte solution under high shear stirring at a temperature equal to or lower than the glass transition temperature of the polymer. The invention further relates to the (per)fluorinated polymers containing sulfonyl fluoride functional groups isolated by the process and characterised by a loss of weight at 200&#xb0; C. lower than 1% as determined by thermogravimetric analysis.

Microporous membrane composites that are non-dewetting are disclosed. These microporous membrane composites are wet with solutions of methanol and water and are non-dewetting following autoclave treatment in water. The microporous membrane composites comprise a microporous membrane support that is coated with a crosslinked ionomer comprising hydrophilic groups. Compared to the microporous membrane support, the microporous membrane composite has a flow loss on average in isopropyl alcohol of less than 82%.
