Polyphosphate compositions are produced by a process that includes the steps of continuously introducing a phosphate compound into a polymerization vessel, polymerizing the phosphate compound at a temperature of 250-450° C. for a time period sufficient to form the polyphosphate composition, and continuously discharging the polyphosphate composition from the polymerization vessel. The phosphate compound can be fed to the polymerization vessel in the form of an aqueous slurry containing 5-50 wt. % of the phosphate compound. Resulting polyphosphate compositions often contain at least 8 wt. % of a polyphosphate and less than 35 wt. % of the phosphate compound.

Methods for the continuous polymerization of phosphate compounds to form polyphosphate compositions

Compositions containing an inorganic flame retardant, an organic amphiphilic compound, an optional suspension agent, and water are disclosed. These compositions can be used to produce coatings with both flame retardancy and water repellency for a variety of substrates.

Processes for producing melamine octamolybdates having high thermal stability include a step of reacting molybdenum trioxide and melamine in an acidic aqueous system at a pH of less than or equal to about 4 to form a slurry of the melamine octamolybdate. The resulting melamine octamolybdate can be characterized by a decomposition onset temperature (or a temperature at a weight loss of 1%, or a temperature at a weight loss of 2%) on a thermogravimetric analysis curve of greater than 300&#xb0; C., and is useful in polymer compositions as a smoke suppressant.

Disclosed is a silica substrate treated with a polysiloxane, and an organosilane, wherein the organosilane is described by the formula: RSi(R')(OR&#x2033;); wherein R is a long-chain hydrocarbon group having between about 8 to about 30 carbon atoms, which may also contain organofunctional groups such as vinyl, methacryl, amino, sulfur, and epoxy groups; R&#x2032; and R&#x2033; are independently selected from a methyl and ethyl group; and X is either 0 or 1. The optimal use for the treated silica substrate is as a rheology modifier in epoxy polymer materials, however, the silica substrate could also be used in other chemical compositions such as polyurethanes, polyesters, silicones, and hydrocarbon oils.
