Devices, systems, and techniques for identifying a dendrite material within a battery. The method comprising receiving, by a battery management system, an output from sensing circuitry within the battery indicative of a first voltage level, detecting, by the battery management system, a change from the first voltage level to a second voltage level that is indicative of an internal short within a sensing sheet, determining by the battery management system, a resistance and a two-dimensional position of the internal short within the sensing sheet, and identifying, by the battery management system, a dendrite material based on the resistance of the internal short.

Internal short detection and mitigation in batteries

An essentially carbon-free cathode for a lithium/air secondary battery and methods for making are provided. The cathode includes a hollow porous conductive metal oxide particle such as indium tin oxide, an optional functional layer, and an electrically conductive binder.

Metal oxide cathode

A metal/air battery includes an oxygen management system that delivers oxygen to the battery during a discharge cycle. The oxygen management system includes an oxygen separations unit and an oxygenated gas supply reservoir that are fluidly coupled to a positive electrode of the battery via a valve system. The valve system selectively places the oxygen separations unit and the oxygenated gas supply reservoir in fluid communication with the positive electrode during the discharge cycle. The oxygen management system also includes a compressor with an outlet fluidly coupled to the oxygenated gas supply reservoir and an inlet fluidly connected to the oxygen separations unit via the valve system. The valve system selectively places the oxygen separations unit in fluid communication with the oxygenated gas supply reservoir during one or more of the discharge cycle and a charge cycle of the battery.

A method of managing a battery system, the battery system including at least one battery cell, at least one sensor configured to measure at least one characteristic of the battery cell, and a battery management system including a microprocessor and a memory, the method comprising receiving by the battery management system, from the at least one sensor at least one measured characteristic of the battery cell at a first time and at least one measured characteristic of the battery cell at a second time. The battery management system estimating, at least one state of the battery cell by applying a physics-based battery model, the physics based battery model being based on differential algebraic equations; and regulating by the battery management system, at least one of charging or discharging of the battery cell based on the at least one estimated state.

A method of managing a battery system, the method including receiving at least one measured characteristic of the at least one battery cell from the at least one sensor, estimating at least one state of the at least one battery cell at a first time by applying an electrochemical-based battery model, estimating at least one physical parameter of the at least one battery cell based on the at least one measured characteristic and the estimation of the at least one state, estimating the at least one state at a second time, subsequent to the first time, by applying the electrochemical-based battery model based on the estimated at least one parameter, and regulating at least one of charging or discharging of the at least one battery cell based on the estimation of the at least one state.
