A bricked sub-wavelength periodic waveguide and a modal adapter, power divider and polarization splitter that use the waveguide. The waveguide includes blocks disposed periodically with a period 'L' on a substrate and which alternate with a covering material. The first blocks have a width “a” and the second blocks have a width “b”, alternating on the substrate according to a period “L” the second blocks being shifted a distance “d” the first blocks in the direction of propagation. A modal adapter, a power divider and a polarization splitter all use the periodic waveguide and can operate with larger wave periods without leaving the sub-wavelength regime.

An integrated mode converter and multiplexer (/demultiplexer) combines a multimode interference coupler, at least one phase-shifter and a symmetrical Y-junction. The dispersion of the multimode interference coupler is engineered through subwavelength structures in order to achieve a very wide bandwidth. Several phase-shifter topologies for further bandwidth enhancement are disclosed, as well as architectures for multiplexing a greater number of optical modes.

The invention relates to a waveguide and a polarisation splitter based on said waveguide, in which a rotation of an angle greater than zero is applied to a plurality of sections of a core material and a plurality of sections of a covering material, thereby achieving an independent control of the refractive indices of a zero-order transverse electric mode and a zero-order transverse magnetic mode. The invention relates to an integrated polarisation splitter based on a sub-wavelength multimode interference coupler (), in other words, a multimode interference coupler () with an anisotropic multimode waveguide region formed by a plurality of sections of core material () and a plurality of sections of a cladding material () alternately arranged in a periodic way, with a period (&#x39b;) smaller than the wavelength of a light propagated through said anisotropic region. The core material sections () are rotated an angle (&#x3b1;) greater than zero with respect to a perpendicular with an input waveguide () to increase the anisotropic character of the multimode waveguide region.
