A dropout recloser is capable of in accordance with its operating programming after a predetermined number of fault interrupting operations, e.g., 1, 2, 3 or more but typically 3, to drop out of a cutout and hang freely in a hinge contact of the cutout providing sectionalization with an observable visible gap. The recloser includes fault interrupting and reclosing components, a drop out mechanism and a controller. The drop out mechanism may include a bi-stable actuator to affect fault interrupting operation and dropout operation. The device may include motion limiting structures. The recloser may have a number of operating modes or sequences.

Dropout recloser

An actuator assembly including a first actuator having a first magnetically actuated plunger and a first latching plate, where the first plunger is operable to be magnetically latched to the first latching plate. The actuator assembly further includes a second actuator coupled to and axially aligned with the first actuator. The second actuator includes a second magnetically actuated plunger, a second latching plate, a sleeve positioned within and extending from the second plunger and being rigidly secured to the first plunger, and a tolerance spring wrapped around the sleeve. The second plunger is operable to be magnetically latched to the second latching plate, where latching of the second plunger causes the tolerance spring to compress and provide additional latching force of the first plunger to the first latching plate.

Magnetic latching actuator

A transformer assembly including a transformer that is part of an underground residential power distribution circuit and that provides fault isolation and restoration. The transformer assembly includes an enclosure enclosing a primary winding and a secondary winding. The transformer assembly also includes first and second switching devices mounted to a panel of the enclosure, where each switching device includes an outer housing, a transformer interface electrically coupled to the primary winding, a connector interface electrically coupled to a first connector and a vacuum interrupter having a fixed contact and a movable contact. The fixed contact is electrically coupled to the connector interface or the transformer interface and the movable terminal is electrically coupled to the other connector interface or the transformer interface.

Transformer for underground radial loop network

A current transformer assembly for harvesting power from a primary conductor, such as a power line, for operating electronics, where the assembly is secured to the conductor while the conductor is connected. The assembly includes a current transformer having a transformer structure with a central opening that accepts the primary conductor and a spindle member for accepting a current transformer magnetic tape operating as the core of the current transformer. The assembly also includes a tape carrier secured to the structure on which the transformer tape is wound, and a winding device operable to unwind the transformer tape from the tape carrier and wind the tape onto the spindle member.

Spiral core current transformer for energy harvesting applications

A control system and method for a group of interconnected feeders which enables fault location, isolation and service restoration without requiring each switch to have topology knowledge of devices in adjacent feeders. The method defines, for each switch, connectivity and X/Y directional information about its neighboring switches and propagates this information throughout each feeder. A leader device is also determined for each feeder. Information about topology of adjacent feeders is not needed by all devices. Only normally-open tie switches which define a boundary between two adjacent feeders have knowledge of the devices in both feeders. Switches which open during fault isolation automatically find open tie switches in a direction opposite the fault, and request service restoration downstream of the fault by providing power from an adjacent feeder. Leader devices ensure an overload condition is not created before initiating opening and closing operations of switches downstream of the fault.

Tie switch restoration

A switch assembly that is part of a transformer in an underground residential power distribution circuit and that provides fault isolation and restoration. The switch assembly includes first and second switching devices each having an outer housing, a transformer interface electrically coupled to the transformer, a connector interface electrically coupled to a first connector and a first vacuum interrupter having a fixed contact and a movable contact, where the fixed contact is electrically coupled to the connector interface and the movable contact is electrically coupled to the transformer interface. A control board controls the first and second switching devices, where the control board is responsive to voltage signals from capacitors in the first and second switching devices.

Loop restoration switching device assembly including multiple switches with common control

A switching device that is part of a transformer in an underground residential power distribution circuit and provides fault isolation and restoration. The switching device includes a transformer interface for coupling the device to the transformer and a connector interface for coupling the device to a connector. The device also includes a vacuum interrupter having a fixed terminal and a movable terminal, where the fixed terminal is electrically coupled to the connector interface and the movable terminal is electrically coupled to the transformer interface. A control rod is coupled to the movable terminal, an actuator assembly is coupled to the control rod and is operable to move the control rod to open and close the vacuum interrupter. A capacitor is electrically coupled to the fixed terminal, and provides an interface for power line communications signals, voltage sensing, help determine power flow direction and help determine the distance to a fault.

Loop restoration switching device

A method for isolating a fault in an underground power distribution network. The network includes a power line, a plurality of transformers electrically coupled to and positioned along the power line, a first recloser connected to one end of the power line and a second recloser connected to an opposite end of the power line, where each transformer includes an upstream switching device and a downstream switching device, and where power is provided to both ends of the power line through the first and second reclosers and one of the switching devices is a normally open switching device. The method includes detecting overcurrent by some of the switching devices, detecting loss of voltage by some of the switching devices and sending clear to close messages to some of the switching devices to open and close certain ones of the switching devices to isolate the fault.

Method for restoring power in an underground radial loop network

A switch assembly including a switch and a high impedance element used for energy harvesting purposes that are connected to a power line and assembly electronics. The high impedance element has higher impedance than the switch so that current flows through the switch from the power line when the switch is closed and through the high impedance element from the power line when the switch is open. The switch assembly also includes a current sensing device, such as a current sensing resistor, electrically coupled in series with the high impedance element and the electronics. By measuring the current flow using the current sensing device, it is possible to infer the voltage across the high impedance element since its impedance is known. This voltage can be used to provide point on wave closing of the switch and to determine the line voltage magnitude.

Voltage readings using high voltage resistor across vacuum interrupter

A switch assembly including a switch and a high impedance element used for energy harvesting purposes that are connected to a power line at one end and assembly electronics at an opposite end, where in one non-limiting embodiment the switch assembly has particular application for use in connection with a vacuum interrupter. The high impedance element has higher impedance than the switch so that current flows through the switch from the power line when the switch is closed and through the high impedance element from the power line when the switch is open, where power from the high impedance element can power a switch closing device, such as a solenoid actuator. The high impedance element can be a resistive element, a capacitive element or a combination of a resistive and capacitive element.

Switch assembly with energy harvesting

A fault protection system for providing protection from fault current for components and devices on a lateral line proximate to a distribution transformer in a power distribution network. The system includes a single-phase recloser having a vacuum interrupter that is controlled by a controller. In one embodiment, the recloser has an insulating body that is molded in combination with an insulating body of a bushing that is connected to the distribution transformer. In this embodiment, the controller can be powered by a current transformer within the recloser. In another embodiment, the recloser is mounted to a utility pole separate from the distribution transformer, where the controller is powered by the low voltage side of the transformer and the current transformer is eliminated. An isolated power supply is provided between the transformer and the controller to provide voltage isolation.

Power distribution system lateral protection and method

A method for controlling multiple switching devices in an electrical power distribution network in response to detecting a fault. The method determines that a fault current is present, and opens a switch in each of the switching devices in response thereto. The method then initiates a current pulse in the switch in a farthest upstream switching device for a first pulse duration time, closes the switch in the farthest upstream recloser if no fault current is detected during the first pulse duration temporarily changes the TCC curve of the farthest upstream recloser to a second TCC curve that is an instantaneous or near instantaneous TCC curve, and initiates a current pulse in the switch in a next farthest upstream switching device that is downstream of the farthest upstream switching device after the switch in a farthest upstream switching device is closed.

Method for coordinating switches in multiple reclosers in a distribution feeder line in response to detection of a fault

Detection of faults in an electrical power distribution network that includes measuring current flowing through a recloser in a feeder line, detecting a fault current indicating a fault is present in the feeder line, and opening a switch in the recloser in response to detecting the fault current. A first pulse having a first pulse duration time is generated, and the current flow in the recloser during the first pulse duration time is analyzed. A second pulse having a second duration time that is longer than the first pulse duration time is generated if it is determined that no fault current exists during the first pulse duration time, and the system voltages and the current flowing through the recloser after the second pulse duration time is analyzed for the presence of the fault.
