A multiple degree of freedom hinge system is provided, which is particularly well adapted for eyewear, such as spatial computing headsets. In the context of such spatial computing headsets having an optics assembly supported by opposing temple arms, the hinge system provides protection against over-extension of the temple arms or extreme deflections that may otherwise arise from undesirable torsional loading of the temple arms. The hinge systems also allow the temple arms to splay outwardly to enable proper fit and enhanced user comfort.

An open cell foam is used to create a seal between a camera and a shell piece. The shell piece, camera, seal and a transparent window form a closed front cavity. Because the cavity is closed, dust can remain away from a lens of the camera.

A fiber scanning system includes an actuator configured to have an actuator natural frequency, and a fiber optic scanning element coupled to the actuator. The fiber optic scanning element is configured to have a fiber natural frequency that is within a threshold of the actuator natural frequency, such that a displacement gain of the fiber optic scanning element as a function of operating frequency exhibits a first peak value at a first resonance frequency less than the fiber natural frequency, and a second peak value at a second resonance frequency greater than the fiber natural frequency.

Techniques for improving a fiber scanning system

A method of fabricating a variable diameter fiber includes providing a fiber optic cable comprising a cladding region, a fiber core, and a plurality of sacrificial regions disposed in the cladding region and focusing a laser beam at a series of predetermined locations inside the fiber optic cable. The method also includes creating a series of damage sites associated with the series of predetermined locations, wherein the series of damage sites define a variable diameter profile and a latticework in the cladding region of the fiber optic cable. The method further includes exposing the fiber optic cable to an etchant solution, preferentially etching the series of damage sites, and separating peripheral portions of the fiber optic cable to release the variable diameter fiber.

Methods and systems for fabrication of shaped fiber elements using laser ablation

A method of fabricating a variable diameter fiber includes providing a fiber optic cable, focusing a laser beam at a predetermined location inside the fiber optic cable, and creating a damage site at the predetermined location. The method also includes focusing the laser beam at a series of additional predetermined locations inside the fiber optic cable and creating a plurality of additional damage sites at the additional predetermined locations. The damage site and the additional damage sites define a variable diameter profile. The method further includes exposing the fiber optic cable to an etchant solution, preferentially etching the damage site and the plurality of additional damage sites, and separating a portion of the fiber optic cable to release the variable diameter fiber.

A fiber scanning system can have optimized performance by substantially matching the natural frequencies of the fiber scanning system's actuator and fiber optic scanning element. By matching the natural frequencies, the fiber scanning system can increase the maximum distance that the tip of the fiber optic scanning element may be driven relative to a resting position. Such an effect may be produced because matching the natural frequencies of the fiber scanner allows for larger amplitudes to be achieved. It should be noted that the natural frequency of the scanning system can be selected to avoid excitation frequencies that could destabilize the system. In this way, the system as a whole may act as a tuned mass damper or a tuned resonance structure, thereby improving scan performance while maintaining a stable scanning system.
