Embodiments of the disclosure relate to antenna array beamforming in a remote unit(s) in a wireless distribution system (WDS). In this regard, a remote unit in a WDS includes an antenna array having a plurality of radio frequency (RF) antennas. The RF antennas transmit a plurality of modified downlink RF signals in a plurality of phases. A control circuit in the remote unit determines the phases to cause the RF antennas to transmit a formed radiation beam(s) in a radiation direction(s). The control circuit controls a plurality of phase shifters to generate the modified downlink RF signals in the phases. By supporting antenna array beamforming in the remote unit, it is possible to steer the formed radiation beam(s) according to a specific floor layout(s) to provide enhanced indoor RF coverage in the WDS. As a result, it may be possible to reduce deployment and/or installation costs of the WDS.

The present invention relates to a method for optimizing a real cellular, wireless communication network that combines mobility load balancing (MLB) with coverage and capacity optimization (CCO) in a joint and coordinated optimization. An optimal set of physical base station parameters is determined by performing an iterative direct search. The iterative direct search comprises a partitioning strategy to jointly determine an optimal partition of the served area and an associated optimal load of each of the plurality of base stations for a current set of physical base station parameters for each direct search iteration; said partitioning strategy using an updated value of the received power of the pilot or reference signal for each the plurality of user locations associated with the current set of physical base station parameters for each direct search iteration.

Method for joint and coordinated load balancing and coverage and capacity optimization in cellular communication networks

A modular antenna system and a method for signal processing using the modular antenna system are provided to overcome the missing scalability of conventional antenna arrays and improve the overall antenna array performance as well as facilitate individually replacing defective or not reliably operating radio-units or radio-subunits in modular antenna array systems and provide a calibration procedure which can be adapted to a scalable antenna array. The modular antenna system includes a base station, and at least one radio-unit comprising at least two radio-subunits. Each radio-subunit includes a radio-module and an antenna-module. The radio-module includes a digital signal-processing unit, at least a transceiver, a front-end and a power amplifier. The radio-subunits provide an identical architecture and are modularly connected together via a connector interface and each radio-subunit has an own IQ-input and an own IQ-output.
