A method for operating an internal combustion engine having a hardware structure including an engine control unit and a maintenance unit, an electronic engine identification module and an engine control program, the method having the steps: providing a computer program product via a network by which an engine identification and engine data are loaded together and are exchanged, wherein the computer program product is designed for uploading and/or downloading a maintenance software module by which the engine identification and the engine data are compiled; loading the computer program product onto a non-volatile storage medium; coupling the non-volatile storage medium to the maintenance unit of the hardware structure and executing the computer program product; exchanging the maintenance software module between the non-volatile storage medium and the maintenance unit; identifying the engine and compiling engine data by the maintenance software module and a hardware component of the hardware structure.

A master/slave arrangement of an electronic engine control device with an engine identification module. The electronic engine control device controls and regulates the internal combustion machine. The engine identification module includes at least one microprocessor and a memory building block for storing an engine identification as well as engine specifics. The electronic engine control device and the engine identification module exchange data through an engine cable harness. The engine identification module is arranged inseparably at the crank housing of the internal combustion machine. The engine identification module can be removed from the crank housing as well as from the engine cable harness only by being destroyed.

A method for assigning addresses to injectors of an internal combustion machine, wherein, prior to the starting procedure, an electronic motor control device selects a first injector by activating the first injector by a first control line from the electronic motor control device. A first address value is placed on the motor control device and the first injector assumes the first address value as the address assigned to it.

In an arrangement for controlling an internal combustion engine, comprising an electronic engine control unit, an injector with an injection needle for controlling the injecting of fuel into a combustion chamber of the engine and a connecting line extending between the electronic engine control unit and the injector for the transmission if signals therebetween, an intelligent electronic component is integrated into the injector including an electronic memory unit, a computation unit, an energy storage device forming an energy supply for the electronic component and also a measuring unit for opto-electronically detecting the movement of the fuel injector needle.

Contributions of individual cylinders of the internal-combustion engine to the rotational acceleration are determined by the rotational speed course of the crankshaft by individually cutting off the cylinders successively. From the thus obtained rotational speed course curves, a pulse response spectrum {right arrow over (I)} of an operating cycle is formed at least for the harmonic of the 0.5th order. In normal operation, the rotational speed course of the crankshaft is then continuously recorded above the angle of each operating cycle. By a Fourier transformation, Fourier coefficients are determined as a resultant {right arrow over (R)} at least of the harmonic of the 0.5th order. Correction factors for the injection quantities are obtained for equalization of the individual cylinders with respect to their rotational speed fractions. The components of the resultant {right arrow over (R)} situated in the direction of the pulse response vectors are multiplied with the pulse responses {right arrow over (I)} and are combined by addition.
