The present invention provides a process and apparatus for cleaning and reclamation of an industrial waste containing oily metallic solids by magnetically concentrating the oily magnetic solids, mixing the concentrated solids with a chemical release agent, applying microwave radiation to the mixture, and separately collecting the clean metallic solids and recovered oil components.

Microwave assisted cleaning and reclamation of industrial wastes

An infrared gas analyzer for measuring low concentrations of a target gas, on the order of parts per million, in a sample gas is comprised of a gas sampling chamber, an infrared light source, and a power source for energizing the light source. A plurality of filters is provided to transmit infrared radiation at certain wavelengths. The wavelengths are chosen such that the effects of unwanted gases (such as water and carbon dioxide) can be removed from the final output signal. A plurality of infrared detectors are responsive to the filters for producing a plurality of electrical signals. A circuit is provided for combining the plurality of electrical signals to produce an output signal representative of the concentration of the target gas independently of other gases in the sample gas. A method of measuring low concentrations of a target gas is also disclosed.

Non-dispersive infrared gas analyzer with interfering gas correction

A magnetic sweeper 20 is disclosed for capturing airborne particles which exhibit ferromagnetic behavior. The magnetic sweeper 20 uses a magnet(s) 43 having a magnetic field strength which captures particles coming within a predetermined distance of the magnet 43. A non-magnetic endless belt 31 is arranged about the magnet 43, wherein the particles are impinged against the belt 31 by the magnetic field lines of flux. This area is defined as a particle capturing first station. The belt 31 moves the captured particles further away from the magnet 43 to a second station. Located at the second station is a collector which includes a vacuum, a brush 41 and a particle flange. As will be appreciated by those skilled in the art, the magnetic field strength diminishes with distance from the magnet 43. Accordingly, after a certain distance from the magnet 43, the field strength drops to a point where the particles fall from the belt 31. When the particles are released, the particles are entrained in a vacuum and transported to a storage location 32 using the vacuum. A preferred location for the magnetic sweeper 20 is under the rear coupler 21 of a locomotive 25.

Magnetic sweeper apparatus and method

A CO based, Diesel discriminating, fire detection system and method is disclosed which significantly reduces the threshold of CO needed to detect a fire in a mine that also contains CO from Diesel equipment without a corresponding increase in the number of false alarms. The system measures both the CO and NO levels at many points throughout the mine and calculates a CO/NO ratio for each of these locations. A long term average concentration (4 hours) and a short term average concentration (1 hour) for both CO and NO are continually updated to reflect the changing dynamics of the mine environment. Using the CO/NO ratio, the detection system can effectively differentiate between CO produced by a Diesel and CO produced from a fire and can activate an alarm when the CO level resulting from a fire exceeds a predetermined threshold level.

Method and system for detecting underground mine fires

A gas sensing thick film is positioned on an insulating substrate in contact with a pair of electrodes. A non-porous glass layer surrounds the film to stabilize it on the substrate. A heating element maintains the film at a preselected elevated temperature. The gas sensing thick film has a response characteristic for a preselected target gas to be detected which is enhanced by impregnating the film with platinum or palladium chlorine free compounds. The response characteristic of the gas sensing film is further increased by promoting combustion of interference gases on an outer filter layer fabricated of either conductive or nonconductive material. The incorporation of an insulating material between the gas sensing film and the outer filter layer also serves to increase the relative response of the gas sensing film to a preselected target gas.

Apparatus for simultaneous detection of target gases

A gas sensing instrument provides programmable control of the operating temperatures of an array of gas sensors for the detection of target gases in air. The control facilitates precise temperature setpoint resolution. The gas sensors in the array have an improved construction density with reduction in size and an extended operating life provided by reduced power consumption. A programmable circuit functions as a programmable-resistor temperature controller in a Wheatstone bridge configuration. A multiplying digital to analog converter circuit controls the ratio of voltage to current that functions as a resistance equivalent. The programmable circuit is interfaced with a computer to provide selectable temperature control for at least 256 setpoints.
