A CDMA communication system supports designated mode data bursts and contention-based transmissions on a reverse link common channel from a subscriber unit to a base station. When transmissions are scheduled and serviced in the designated mode data burst, collisions are avoided. The number of slots consumed in the designated mode data bursts depend upon the volume of data the subscriber unit has to transmit to the base station. A common power control channel provides power control bits and reservation indications for at least one reverse link common channel for closed loop reverse link power control on the common channels.

Disclosed is a method of and apparatus for increasing the capacity of a wireless communication system. This is accomplished by having users that can support a higher than base modulation order be required to do so under predetermined conditions such as electrical distance from a base transceiver station (BTS) antenna to a user, the reception of data in a high speed burst (HSD) and the like. The same digital processor apparatus that may be used to provide a base order modulation scheme may be reprogrammed in a more complex fashion to provide signal processing at the higher modulation rate for any given user channel.

M-ary modulation for wireless systems

A flexible frame arrangement for a CDMA wireless communications network is disclosed. A signal for transmission in the network includes several frames for transferring data between network nodes. At least one of the frames includes a hierarchical sub-frame structure having a physical layer frame and an interleaver block, a forward error control (FEC) block, and an automatic repeat request (ARQ) block. The sub-frame arrangement may be used in a spread spectrum wireless network such as CDMA2000 or W-CDMA. The FEC blocks transmit error control information and are subdivided into one or more of the ARQ blocks. Each ARQ block includes information bits and overhead bits such as cyclic redundancy code (CRC) bits and zero bits.

Flexible frame structure for a CDMA wireless network

A new access channel protocol for use in cellular systems such as CDMA whereby the data transfer efficiency of an access message is increased by removing the requirement that a preamble frame and a message capsule frame have equal times of duration. With such removal, the BTS must inform listening MSs as to the time duration of the frames in each of the preamble and the message portions of the access channel time slot in addition to previously supplied information as to the number of frames in each portion. When unequal frame duration times are allowed, each portion of the access channel may be more nearly optimized to the actual time required to perform the functions of synchronization and message detection.

CDMA physical layer packet mechanisms for distributed bursty traffic

A communications system and method that separates operational aspects of a packet data service to be provided on a wireless network into separate, independent state diagrams. The method first decomposes the communication service into several different service layers. The method then defines a dynamic behavior of the service layers and an interaction therebetween. Once the behavior and interaction between the layers is defined, the method creates a control element with which to coordinate the service layers.

A CDMA communication system supports designated mode data bursts on a reverse link contention based channel from a subscriber unit to a base station. The reverse link contention based channel also supports contention-based transmissions from the subscriber unit to the base station. When transmissions are scheduled and serviced in the designated mode data burst, collisions are avoided. Further, because setting up the designated mode data bursts on the reverse link contention based channel require little overhead as compared to the setup of a traffic channel the CDMA system is operated at a greater efficiency. The reverse link contention based channel may be a Reverse Common Control Channel, a Reverse Access Channel or another contention-based channel. Designated mode data bursts on the reverse link contention based channel may consume a single slot or multiple slots. The number of slots consumed in the designated mode data bursts depends upon the volume of data the subscriber unit has to transmit to the base station. The subscriber unit may state the amount of data it desires to transmit in the designated mode data burst. Based upon this stated amount, the base station may reserve multiple slots for the designated mode data burst. Then, the subscriber unit will transmit data during the slots.

A CDMA communication system supports underlay transmissions and direct spread overlay transmissions such that the overlay transmissions are at least partially orthogonal to underlay transmissions. A base station supports both the underlay transmissions and the overlay transmissions and includes an interface to a mobile switching center, an underlay unit, an overlay unit and at least one radio frequency (RF) unit. The interface receives communications intended for a plurality of mobile stations serviced by the base station. These communications include underlay communications intended for mobile stations (MSs) supporting underlay transmissions and overlay communications intended for MSs supporting overlay transmissions. The underlay unit receives the underlay portion of the communications and produces underlay transmissions. The overlay unit receives the overlay portion of the communications and produces overlay transmissions. Then, the underlay transmissions and the overlay transmissions are received by the at least one RF unit and transmitted via at least one antenna to the plurality of MSs. Each of the MSs receives both the underlay transmissions and the overlay transmissions. However, those MSs supporting the underlay transmissions extract intended underlay communications while the MSs supporting overlay transmissions extract intended overlay communications. The underlay unit and the overlay unit produce the overlay transmissions such that they are at least partially orthogonal to the underlay transmissions. A synchronization unit coupled to the underlay unit and the overlay unit that causes the overlay transmissions to be substantially synchronized with the underlay transmissions. In another construction, differing base stations provide the underlay transmissions and the overlay transmissions.

CDMA direct spread overlay system and method of operation

In a receiver of a simulcast multi-carrier CDMA (code division multiple access) communications system, a combined data signal is produced by combining signals representing data received for the plurality of carriers and is multiplied by the complex conjugate of a composite reference signal, representing characteristics of the plurality of carriers, produced by combining signals representing a reference signal received for the plurality of carriers, thereby improving multi-path resolution due to frequency diversity of the reference signal over the multiple carriers of the system. The receiver can be simplified by demodulating the signals of the plurality of carriers in common to produce a demodulated signal which is common to the data and reference signals for the plurality of carriers, the data and reference signals being subsequently separated using their respective orthogonal codes. Data signals can be recovered both with and without the improved multi-path resolution over the multiple carriers, and an optimum selection between them can be made.

Multi-carrier CDMA communications systems

An enhanced mechanism for the reverse link power control in a wireless communication system, especially for high speed data applications and fixed wireless communication applications, dynamically adjusts the power control step size of the reverse link power control. The power control step size is dynamically adjusted based on various factors including types of service, number of reverse supplemental code channels, total received power at the base station, estimated diversity gain and required mobility, among others. The system which includes stationary infrastructure, can query a subscriber unit's capability in the support of a pre-defined set of power control step sizes before assigning it to the subscriber unit. Furthermore, the subscriber unit may decide its optimized power control step size based on certain feedbacks from the system. In a specific embodiment, enhancement to the ANSI EIA/TIA-95 system is provided such that it supports a variable subscriber unit power control step size and associated signaling in accord with this invention.
