A method and system are geosteering in coiled tubing directional drilling. In an exemplary method, a response from a gas sensor disposed on a bottom hole assembly is measured and a gas parameter from the response is determined. A trend in the gas parameter is determined. Adjustments to geosteering vectors for the bottom hole assembly are determined based, at least in part, on the gas parameter, the trend, or both.

Geosteering in directional drilling

Systems and methods are provided for geosteering in directional drilling based on water detection. An exemplary method includes determining a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for an electromagnetic communication between devices on a bottom hole assembly, and determining a distance to water based, at least in part, on the SNR. Adjustments to geosteering vectors for the bottom hole assembly are determined based, at least in part, on the distance to water.

Water detection for geosteering in directional drilling

Methods of marine to borehole measurement may include dispersing one or more borehole receivers in one or more boreholes; distributing one or more marine receivers in marine water at a seabed; immersing an electromagnetic dipole source in the marine water above the seabed; energizing the electromagnetic dipole source; measuring one or more borehole signal measurements using the one or more borehole receivers and one or more seabed signal measurements using the one or more marine receivers; and determining a three-dimensional property distribution of a reservoir of interest by processing the one or more borehole signal measurements and the one or more seabed signal measurements.

Methods and system are provided for measuring parameters while drilling a wellbore using a coiled tubing drilling apparatus. An exemplary system includes an instrumented mandrel including a notch in an outer surface of the instrumented mandrel, and an indentation at each end of the notch. A sensor package in the system includes a sensor, a tubular assembly, and a mounting bracket at each end of the tubular assembly. The sensor package is sized to fit in the notch, with each of the mounting brackets fitting in one of the indentations at each end of the knot, and wherein the sensor package is substantially flush with the instrumented mandrel.

Systems and methods of surface logging a well use a plurality of polymeric taggants distinguishable from each other. The systems and methods can include adding each of the plurality of polymeric taggants in a repeating sequence to a circulating drilling fluid while drilling the well and taking a sample drill cuttings carried by the circulating drilling fluid. The systems and methods can also include measuring concentrations of individual polymeric taggants attached to the drill cuttings in the sample and identifying a depth associated with the sample based on the measured concentrations of individual polymeric taggants and on the sequence.

Surface logging wells using depth-tagging of cuttings

A method of surface logging a well includes adding each of multiple polymeric taggants to a circulating drilling fluid in an addition sequence while drilling the well. Each polymeric taggant includes a polymer and a respective fluorescent dye having an emission wavelength or excitation wavelength different from that of each other fluorescent dye. The method includes taking a sample of drill cuttings carried by a drilling fluid while drilling a well, wherein the sample of drill cuttings includes polymeric taggants attached to the drill cuttings. The method includes extracting the dyes from the sample of drill cuttings into an extract solution; determining an indication of the type of and the concentration of each of the dyes in the extract solution; and determining a depth associated with the sample of drill cuttings based on the indication of the concentration of each of the dyes and on the addition sequence.

A method for acoustic geosteering in directional drilling is provided. The method includes measuring a response from a fiber-optic distributed acoustic sensor disposed on a bottom hole assembly and determining a location of the bottom hole assembly from seismic waves received from surface sources. A subterranean layer structure proximate to the bottom hole assembly is determined from reflections of a locally generated soundwave. Adjustments to geosteering vectors for the bottom hole assembly are determined based, at least in part, on the location and the subterranean layer structure.

Acoustic geosteering in directional drilling

A deviated or horizontal wellbore is drilled in a geologic formation with a multiphase fluid including a gas by a rotating drill bit positioned at a downhole end of a drill string. Portions of the gas are released into the wellbore during the drilling. During the drilling, soundwaves are emitted into the geologic formation from within the wellbore by a set of acoustic emitters attached to the drill string. The received reflected soundwaves are transmitted by the set of solid acoustic couplers to a set of acoustic sensors contacting the solid acoustic couplers. The reflected soundwaves are received by the acoustic sensors. Rock properties of the geologic formation are determined based on the less attenuated reflected soundwaves transmitted to the acoustic sensors by the solid acoustic couplers. A drilling direction of the wellbore is adjusted based on the determined rock properties.

Systems and methods for measuring properties within a subterranean well include a measuring tool having a tool body with a central axis and a tool attachment located at an axial end of the tool body. A delivery line attachment is operable to attach the measuring tool to a delivery line that supports the measuring tool within the subterranean well. A primary treatment platform is in mechanical communication with the tool body. The primary treatment platform has a platform attachment sized to mate with the tool attachment, and at least one treatment system. The at least one treatment system is operable to perform a treatment function within the subterranean well during delivery of the measuring tool into the subterranean well.

Systems and methods for logging while treating

A method for surface logging a well uses a plurality of polymeric taggants distinguishable from each other. The method includes selecting the polymeric taggants that have ceiling temperatures that do not interfere with pyrograms from source rock decomposition and adding each of the plurality of polymeric taggants to a circulating drilling fluid in a sequence while drilling the well. A sample of drill cuttings carried by the circulating drilling fluid is then taken. The method also includes measuring, using pyrolysis-gas chromatographymass spectrometry, concentrations of individual polymeric taggants attached to the drill cuttings in the sample and analyzing, using pyrolysis-gas chromatographymass spectrometry, properties of the drill cuttings. A depth associated with the sample is identified based, at least in part, on the measured concentrations of individual polymeric taggants and on the sequence.

Techniques for controlling hydrocarbon production includes (i) identifying a plurality of reservoir measurements of a subterranean hydrocarbon reservoir located between at least one injection wellbore and at least one production wellbore; (ii) processing the identified plurality of reservoir measurements to generate a petrophysical model of the subterranean hydrocarbon reservoir; (iii) determining, based on the petrophysical model, a flow of an injectant from the injection wellbore toward the production wellbore; and (iv) adjusting an inflow control device (ICD) positioned about the production wellbore based on the determined flow of the injectant.

Some examples of monitoring hydrocarbon reservoirs using induced polarization effect includes inducing polarization in a subterranean zone using an induced polarization fluid. The subterranean zone includes first formations and second formations. A quantity of hydrocarbons in the first formations is greater than quantity of hydrocarbons in the second formations. The induced polarization data is obtained from the subterranean zone. A portion of the induced polarization data from the first formations is different from a portion of the induced polarization data from the second formations. The second formations in the subterranean zone are identified based on the obtained induced polarization data.

Monitoring hydrocarbon reservoirs using induced polarization effect

Some examples of monitoring hydrocarbon reservoirs using induced polarization effect includes inducing polarization in a subterranean zone using an induced polarization fluid. The subterranean zone includes first formations and second formations. A quantity of hydrocarbons in the first formations is greater than quantity of hydrocarbons in the second formations. The induced polarization data is obtained from the subterranean zone. A portion of the induced polarization data from the first formations is different from a portion of the induced polarization data from the second formations. The second formations in the subterranean zone are identified based on the obtained induced polarization data
