Polyisocyanurate foams are prepared by reacting together an organic polyisocyanate, a blowing agent, a trimerization catalyst, and a minor amount of a polyol mixture prepared by digesting polyalkylene terephthalate, particularly polyethylene terephthalate, with a polyol, especially a glycol. Laminates of such foams exhibit a high degree of fire resistance, low smoke evolution on combustion, low foam friability and high compressive strength.

A method for continuously producing an insulation board comprising a rigid plastic foam core having two major surfaces and a facing material on one or both of the major surfaces, the method including conveying a facing material along a production line, depositing a partially expanded froth foam of a plastic mixture, which contains at least one frothing agent, on the facing material, and further expanding and curing the froth foam in contact wiht the facing material to form the insulation board. The board is particularly useful as roof insulation.

Cellular foams, particularly polyisocyanurate foams, are prepared by reacting together an organic polyisocyanate, a blowing agent, a trimerization catalyst, and a minor amount of a polyol mixture prepared by the transesterification with a glycol of a by-product fraction from the manufacture of dimethyl terephthalate, the major portion of said fraction comprising about 15 to 70 weight percent of dimethyl terephthalate, and about 85 to 30 weight percent of a mixture of monomethyl terephthalate, bi-ring esters and polymeric materials. Laminates of such foams exhibit a high degree of fire resistance, low smoke evolution on combustion, low foam friability and high compressive strength.

Polymeric foams from transesterified by-product derived from manufacture

A process for producing a laminate of polyisocyanurate foam which is the reaction product of a polymethylene polyphenylisocyanate and a polyol which is ethoxylated trimethylol propane, ethoxylated trimethylol ethane, ethoxylated pentaerythritol or ethoxylated glycerin. Laminates of such foams exhibit improved adhesion of the facing sheet.

An improved polyisocyanurate comprising polymethylene polyphenylisocyanate having a functionality of 2.1 to 3.2 and having an equivalent weight between 120 and 180; a polyol having an equivalent weight between 30 and 100; certain tertiary amino phenols; an alkali metal carboxylate, and a blowing agent. These compositions exhibit an advantageous cream time, firm time, tack free time, and a low friability.
