A method of localizing failures occurring along a transmission path is provided. A data signal is transmitted along the transmission path, which comprises a path segment. A first network node performs a tandem connection monitoring source function of a tandem connection. A second network node monitors the transmission along the path segment, by performing a tandem connection monitoring sink function. When the first network node detects a failure of the data signal, the first network node enters information indicating a data signal failure into the data signal's overhead field. When the second network node detects a failure by the tandem connection monitory sink function, the second network node enters information into the overhead field. When a third network node detects a failure of the data signal, the third network node uses the information in the overhead field to determine whether the failure occurred within or outside of the path segment.

It is disclosed a method of monitoring, a Multi-Protocol Label Switching network, a tandem connection of a Label Switched Path. The tandem connection to be monitored has an input node and an output node. The method comprises the following steps: receiving a first Operation Administration Management packet at the input node; and generating a second OAM packet at the input node. According to the invention, the following steps are further performed: a tandem connection header is inserted into the first OAM packet; both the first OAM packet with the tandem connection header and the second OAM packet are sent towards the output node; and the second OAM packet is identified according to the presence or absence of said tandem connection header.

A method of dynamically adjusting a transmission capacity of a data transmission connection is proposed. The method comprises different steps at a network end node. An incoming frame-structured time division multiplex signal carrying incoming timeslots is received from a client. The subset has an identifier for identifying an existing data transmission connection and a status indicator for indicating to the network end node a status requested by the client for the corresponding timeslot. A method and circuit are described for improving the pointer processing in the case of synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) or synchronous optical network (SONET) transmission frames with VC4_4c, VC4_16c and VC4_64c concatenated payloads. The technique proposed by the existing Standards provides for two different state diagrams to be used in the pointer processing algorithm. One state diagram is used in the case of a concatenated payload and the other state diagram is used in the case of a non-concatenated payload. However, no solution is disclosed for automatically going from the states of one diagram to the states of the other diagram. The present invention provides a circuit so constructed that it can be used in an apparatus processing STM-4, STM-16 and STM-64 frames, through which the automatic recognition of the VC4-4c, VC4-16c and VC4-64c payload concatenation can be achieved. Therefore, it is not necessary to configure in advance the concatenation or non-concatenation condition.
