A chip fuse includes a first terminal disposed on a first end of a fuse element array and a second terminal disposed on a second end of the fuse element array opposite the first end. The fuse element array includes multiple layers disposed in a stacked arrangement, each layer including a first terminal portion disposed within the first terminal, a second terminal portion disposed within the second terminal, a first fuse element portion orthogonal to and extending between the first terminal portion and the second terminal portion, and a second fuse element portion orthogonal to and extending between the first terminal portion and the second terminal portion. The first fuse element portion is adjacent the second fuse element portion.

Disclosed are various protection devices and associated methods. In some embodiments, a protection device may include a substrate and a fusible element coupled to the substrate, wherein the fusible element may include a first end opposite a second end, and wherein the first and second ends wrap around the substrate. The fusible element may further include a central section comprising a plurality of segments connected end-to-end in a continuous arrangement between the first and second ends, wherein a first set of segments of the plurality of segments extends along a first plane, and wherein a second set of segments of the plurality of segments extends along a second plane, different than the first plane.

Protection device including multi-plane fusible element

Exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure of a fuse may include a fuse body having a first portion and a second portion. The first and second portions may be configured to mate together thereby forming an internal cavity. A first inner termination and a second inner termination may be at least partially attachable to the first and second portions of the fuse body at respective first and second ends. A fusible element may be disposed in the cavity of the fuse body and extendable from the first inner termination at the first end of the fuse body to the second inner termination at the second end of the fuse body. The fusible element may be attachable to the first inner termination at a first connection and the second inner termination at a second connection. The first and second connections may be inspectable when the fuse is in an assembled state.

A method of assembly of an open-cavity, wire-in-air fuse which provides improved manufacturing yield and fuse reliability, involving coiling, braiding or twisting a fusible element around a sacrificial member during the manufacturing process to provide support for the fusible element to prevent mechanical breakages and necking problems commonly encountered during manufacture.

A method of making a fuse including inserting a fuse element into a cavity in a hollow fuse body, attaching a first end cap to the hollow fuse body and electrically connecting a first end of the fuse element to the first end cap, adding a mixture of particles including a melamine compound and a steatite of at least 2 times the melamine compound by weight&#x2014;to the cavity such that the mixture of particles are disposed around the fuse element, and attaching a second end cap to the hollow fuse body and electrically connecting a second end of the fuse element to the second end cap.

Provided herein are improved electrical circuit protection devices for protection against electrostatic discharge (ESD), the devices including a first support substrate, a first electrode and a second electrode formed on the first support substrate, wherein the first electrode and the second electrode are formed from a conductive material. The devices further include a first bonding pad disposed on the first and second electrode, the first bonding pad having a first cavity formed therein; a second support substrate disposed on the first bonding pad, the second support substrate having a second cavity formed therein, and a voltage variable material disposed within the first cavity and the second cavity and electrically connected to the first electrode and the second electrode. The devices further include a second bonding pad disposed on the second support substrate, and a third support substrate disposed on the second bonding pad.

Surface-mountable electrical circuit protection device

Fuses having a melamine-coated-steatite foam filler are described. In particular, melamine-coated-steatite foam filler for use in a fuse comprising steatite coated in a melamine compound (e.g., plasticized melamine resin) and then heated to form crystalline foam filler are described. The foam filler may comprise steatite of substantially 3 times the melamine compound by weight and may be heated and then cooled to form the foam filler.

Foam fuse filler and cartridge fuse

A compact, high breaking capacity fuse that includes a top insulative layer, at least one intermediate insulative layer, and a bottom insulative layer arranged in a vertically stacked configuration. The at least one intermediate layer may have a hole formed therethrough that defines an air gap within the fuse. A first conductive terminal may be formed on a first end of the fuse and a second conductive terminal may be formed on a second end of the fuse. At least one fusible element may connect the first terminal to the second terminal, thus providing an electrically conductive pathway therebetween. A portion of the at least one fusible element may pass through the air gap defined by the hole in the at least one intermediate insulative layer.

Laminated electrical fuse

An improved fuse having one or more counter bores in an interior wall of a hollow tube used as the fuse housing. The fuse includes a fusible element disposed within a cavity defined by the interior wall. The fusible element is electrically connected to first and second end caps via solder. The first and second end caps are attached to respective ends of the hollow tube. The one or more counter bores provide more space for the solder to cover the fusible element resulting in a more reliable electrical connection.

Fuse with counter-bore body

A configuration for fuses and a method of manufacturing is disclosed. A fuse body is made with slots on the ends, allowing solder a greater surface area to grip the body and form an excellent bond. The slots communicate with a central cavity in the fuse body. The improvements relate primarily to surface mount fuses because of the great volume of such fuses in commerce, but may be applied to fuses of any size.
