Double base propellants having a mixture of bismuth and copper salts of hydroxy-substituted benzoic acids added as burning rate (ballistic) modifiers.

Bismuth and copper ballistic modifiers for double base propellants

An energetic plasticizer for double base propellants comprising (1) a mixe of sorbitol tetra-,penta-, and hexa-nitrate (MSN) and (2) a polyolpolynitrate selected from the group consisting of diethyleneglycoldinitrate (DEGDN), triethyleneglycoldinitrate (TEGDN), nitroglycerin (NG) and mixtures thereof. Also included are compound formulations for double base, modified double base, and composite modified double base propellants incorporating the above energetic plasticizer.

Energetic plasticizer and improved gas producing charges

A method for strengthening a propellant charge by incorporating a support ructure in the propellant charge comprises slowly traversing a flexible perforated material through a propellant lacquer until the desired loading is obtained. Reinforcement by this technique makes possible the use of a double base propellant in high-thrust, short-burning applications.

Method of reinforcing propellant charge

The addition of monobasic cupric .beta.-resorcylate to a double base propant plasticized by only nitrate esters having primary nitroxy groups in order to obtain a plateau burning characteristic.

Plateau propellant compositions

At least one combustion modifier is incorporated in liquid propellants by ssolving the modifier in at least one solvent such as alkoxypolyethylene glycol ether or a bis(alkoxypolyethylene glycol) formal to form a solution and mixing the resulting solution with the energetic component of the liquid propellant. Similar solutions of combustion modifier are also suitable for use as casting liquids in cast double-base propellants.

Liquid monopropellants containing dissolved combustion modifiers

Double-base propellant compositions of the plateau and/or mesa type which e comprised of ballistic modifiers of lead and copper salts of acetamidobenzoic acids, acetamidosalicylic acids, and resorcylic acids.
