The disclosed invention relates to the use of esters of unsaturated, physiologically active fatty acids as nutrient media for cell cultivation and, more particularly, as a substitute for foetal bovine serum. In one aspect, the esters comprise more than 50 mol-% of physiologically active fatty acids containing 16 to 24 carbon atoms and 2 to 5 double bonds as the acid component and a lower Calcohol, preferably ethanol, or a sterol as ester component. In another aspect, the esters comprise a transesterification product of natural or synthetic oils or a mixture of such oils having greater than 50 mol-% of unsaturated, physiologically active fatty acids, based on the acyl group, and a lower Calcohol or a sterol. In a further aspect, the esters are used together with sterols, phospholipids and/or vegetable proteins or are liposomally encapsulated.

Processes for preparing conjugated fatty acid products are described wherein (a) a composition which comprises a fatty acid ester having at least two unconjugated, carbon-carbon double bonds is provided; (b) the fatty acid ester is conjugated in the presence of a water-free base; (c) phosphoric acid is added to the conjugated fatty acid ester such that phosphate salts are precipitated; and (d) the precipitated phosphate salts are removed.

Method for producing conjugated fatty acid esters

Processes for preparing linoleic acid raw materials are described wherein the processes comprise: (a) transesterifying a triglyceride component with an alcohol having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, at a temperature of from 80 to 120&deg; C., to form a transesterification mixture comprising linoleic acid esters and one or more by-products selected from the group consisting of glycerides, free glycerol, and soaps, wherein the triglyceride component is comprised of at least 60% by weight linoleic acid; and (b) removing the one or more by-products from the transesterification mixture.
