The computing system includes at least one compute node. The compute node includes an operating system that includes a kernel and a plurality of operating system services of a service type. Providing policy-based operating system services in an operating system on a computing system includes establishing, on the compute node, a kernel policy specifying one of the operating system services of the service type for use in the operating system, and accessing, by the kernel, the specified operating system service. The computing system may also be implemented as a distributed computing system that includes one or more operating system service nodes. One or more of the operating system services may be distributed among the operating system service nodes.

Methods, apparatus, products are disclosed for providing policy-based application services to an application running on a computing system. The computing system includes at least one compute node. The compute node includes an application and a plurality of application services of a service type. Providing policy-based application services to an application running on a computing system includes establishing, on the compute node, a service policy specifying one of the application services of the service type for use by the application, establishing a performance ruleset, the performance ruleset specifying rules for analyzing the performance of the computing system, measuring performance of the computing system, and adjusting the service policy in dependence upon the performance ruleset and the measured performance. Providing policy-based application services to an application running on a computing system may also include accessing, by the application, the specified application service.

A method and apparatus provide data security on a parallel computer system using virtual private networks. An access setup mechanism sets up access control data in the nodes that describes which virtual networks are protected and what applications have access to the protected private networks. When an application accesses data on a protected virtual network, a network access mechanism determines the data is protected and intercepts the data access. The network access mechanism in the kernel may also execute a rule depending on the kind of access that was attempted to the virtual network. Authorized access to the private networks can be made via a system call to the access control mechanism in the kernel. The access control mechanism enforces policy decisions on which data can be distributed through the system via an access control list or other security policies.

Methods, apparatus, and products are disclosed for generating an executable version of an application using a distributed compiler operating on a plurality of compute nodes that include: receiving, by each compute node, a portion of source code for an application; compiling, in parallel by each compute node, the portion of the source code received by that compute node into a portion of object code for the application; performing, in parallel by each compute node, inter-procedural analysis on the portion of the object code of the application for that compute node, including sharing results of the inter-procedural analysis among the compute nodes; optimizing, in parallel by each compute node, the portion of the object code of the application for that compute node using the shared results of the inter-procedural analysis; and generating the executable version of the application in dependence upon the optimized portions of the object code of the application.

Embodiments off the invention provide a mechanism for process migration on a massively parallel computer system. In particular, embodiments of the invention may be used to update process state data for a migrated compute node, such as MPI (or other communication library) state data, across a full collection of compute nodes present in a given parallel system executing a parallel task. Migrating a process form one compute node to another may be useful to address a variety of sub-optimal operating conditions. For example, one or more processes may be migrated to cure network congestion resulting from a poorly mapped task or when a compute node is predicted to experience a hardware failure.

A mesh routing mechanism in the service node of the computer system configures the nodes from a torus to a mesh network when a failure occurs in the torus network. Embodiments of the invention provide a method, system and article of manufacture for parallel application load balancing and distributed work management. In one embodiment, a hierarchy of master nodes may be used to coordinate the actions of pools of worker nodes. Further, the activity of the master nodes may be controlled by a 'coordinator' node. A coordinator node may be configured to distribute work unit descriptions to the collection of master nodes. If needed, embodiments of the invention may be scaled to deeper hierarchies.

A method and apparatus for dynamically rerouting node processes on the compute nodes of a massively parallel computer system using hint bits to route around failed nodes or congested networks without restarting applications executing on the system. When a node has a failure or there are indications that it may fail, the application software on the system is suspended while the data on the failed node is moved to a backup node. The torus network traffic is routed around the failed node and traffic for the failed node is rerouted to the backup node. The application can then resume operation without restarting from the beginning.

A method and apparatus for fault recovery of on a parallel computer system from a soft failure without ending an executing job on a partition of nodes. In preferred embodiments a failed hardware recovery mechanism on a service node uses a heartbeat monitor to determine when a node failure occurs. Where possible, the failed node is reset and re-loaded with software without ending the software job being executed by the partition containing the failed node.
