Polymers (including copolymers) derived from one or more olefins, such including ethylene and C -C &agr;-olefins such as propylene and 1-butene, which polymers have (a) an average ethylene sequence length, ESL, of from, about 1.0 to less than about 3.0; (b) an average of at least 5 branches per 100 carbon atoms of the polymer chains comprising the polymer; (c) at least about 50% of said branches being methyl and/or ethyl branches; (d) at least about 30% of said polymer chains terminated with a vinyl or vinylene group; (e) a number average molecular weight, Mn, of from about 300 to about 15,000 when the polymer is intended for dispersant or wax crystal modifier uses and up to about 500,000 where intended for viscosity modifier uses; and (f) substantial solubility in hydrocarbon and/or synthetic base oil. The polymers are produced using late-transition-metal catalyst systems and, preferably, inexpensive, highly dilute refinery or steam cracker feed streams that have undergone only limited clean-up steps. Fuel and lubricating oil additives, particularly dispersants, wax crystal modifiers and flow improvers, are produced. Where functionalization and derivatization of these polymers is required for such additives it is facilitated by the olefinic structures available in the polymer chains.

The invention pertains to oil soluble copolymers derived from ethylene and 1-butene which have a number average molecular weight between about 1,500 and 7,500, at least about 30 percent of all polymer chains terminated with ethylvinylidene groups, and ethylene-derived content of not greater than about 50 weight percent, and which form solutions in mineral oil free of polymer aggregates, as determined by light scattering measurements. Lubricating oil additives, particularly dispersants, produced by the functionalization and derivatization of these copolymers have enhanced performance (e.g., improved dispersancy and pour point) in lubricating oil compositions, attributable in part to the combination of properties characterizing the copolymers.

Lubricant with a higher molecular weight copolymer lube oil flow improver

An improved process for the homopolymerization and copolymerization of .alpha.-olefins utilizing highly dilute .alpha.-olefin feedstreams to effect high conversions and catalyst efficiencies in the production of non-ethylene copolymers. The instant invention is particularly adaptable to polymerizing the .alpha.-olefin content of commercially available refinery feedstreams such as Raffinate-2.

Dilute process for the polymerization of non-ethylene .alpha.-olefin

Distillate fuel is treated with additives whose structure match the crystal planes of the wax which crystallizes from the fuel to produce crystals below 4000 nanometres in size, suitable additive include novel sulpho-carboxylic materials particularly their esters and amine derivatives such as the amine salts and/or amides of ortho-sulpho benzoic acid.

Homo- or co-polymers derived from one or more alpha-olefins having a number average molecular weight of up to 15,000 and an isotacticity of 75% or greater, and their use as Cold Flow Improvers in crude, fuel or lubricating oil.

Polymers and additive compositions

The present invention is directed to an oil-soluble lubricating oil additive comprising at least one terminally unsaturated ethylene/alpha-olefin/diene interpolymer of 300 to 20,000 number average molecular weight substituted with mono- or dicarboxylic acid producing moieties (preferably dicarboxylic acid or anhydride moieties), wherein the terminal unsaturation comprises terminal ethenylidene unsaturation. The mono- and dicarboxylic acid or anhydride substituted interpolymers of this invention are useful per se as additives to lubricating oils, and can also be reacted with a nucleophilic reagent, such s amines, alcohols, amino alcohols and reactive metal compounds, to form products which are also useful lubricating oil additives, e.g., as dispersants.

Ethylene .alpha.-olefin/diene interpolymer-substituted carboxylic acid

An improved process for the copolymerization of ethylene and .alpha.-olefins utilizing highly dilute .alpha.-olefin feedstreams to effect high conversions and catalyst productivities. The instant invention is particularly adaptable to copolymerizing the .alpha.-olefin content of commercially available refinery feedstreams such as Raffinate-2.

Dilute process for the polymerization of ethylene/.alpha.-olefin

The present invention is directed to an oil-soluble lubricating oil additive comprising at least one terminally unsaturated ethylene/alpha-olefin/diene interpolymer of 300 to 20,000 number average molecular weight substituted with mono- or dicarboxylic acid producing moieties (preferably dicarboxylic acid or anhydride moieties), wherein the terminal unsaturation comprises terminal ethenylidene unsaturation. Ethylene alpha-olefin/diene interpolymer-substituted carboxylic acid

Oil-soluble dispersant additives are disclosed. The additives comprise the reaction product of a functionalized 1-butene copolymer and at least one nucleophilic reactant selected from amines, amino alcohols, alcohols, and reactive metal compounds. The functionalized copolymer has within its structure at least one acyl functional group selected from the group consisting of C.sub.4 to C.sub.10 dicarboxylic acids and derivatives thereof and C.sub.3 to C.sub.10 monocarboxylic acids and derivatives thereof. The 1-butene copolymer is derived from 1-butene and at least one other .alpha.-olefin of formula CH.sub.2 .dbd.CHR', wherein R' is methyl or a C.sub.3 to C.sub.12 linear or branched alkyl group. The copolymer has a number average molecular weight of at least about 700, a molecular weight distribution of less than 5, and ethenylidene groups terminating at least about 30% of all polymer chains. The dispersant additives are useful in oleaginous compositions including lubricating oil compositions and concentrates and fuel compositions.
