A linear bearing is made with races molded in place in a plastic shell. An inner ball cage is assembled by sliding the cage into the shell. Open ends of the ball receiving guides in the cage slide along the inward extending races. The cage and ball guide are completed with a cap fitted in an opposite end of the shell.

Linear bearing assembly

A bearing has a self-lubricating liner including sheets of felted polytetrafluoroethylene fibers impregnated with cured phenolic resin having no surface bonding to the fibers. Sheets of fibrous fabric are felted to sheets of felted fibers. Sintered particles are dispersed in the low friction surface of the liner. Liners are formed by air drying resin-impregnated sheets of felted fibrous material. The resin may be cured in a heated platen press before assembly of the bearing. The bearing is assembled by deforming bearing members to form an interference fit between the members and a bearing liner disposed therebetween. Parting compound applied to one of the bearing members prevents bonding of the liner to that member when the liner is baked to cure the resin and bond the liner to the other member. Bushes and bushings having self-lubricating linings are disclosed. Arbors and mandrels form an interference fit between the linings and bushes and bushings during assembly.

Bearings with felted teflon liners and method for making same

A bearing assembly having an inner race member movably mounted in an outer race member, the inner surface of the outer member being a concave spherical surface and the outer surface of the inner member being a complementary convex spherical surface. The outer race member is received within an aperture formed in the head of a shank assembly. The bearing surfaces are formed of zinc-plated metal having a chromium skin layer and a chromium enriched subsurface layer. The chromium skin layer is about 40 microns thick.

A spherical bearing assembly having an inner race member and an outer race member, the inner surface of the outer race member being a concave spherical surface, the outer surface of the inner member being a complementary convex spherical surface, the inner member including a spool member having a first threaded portion disposed on its outer surface and at least two spherical segments, each segment having a second threaded portion on its inner surface complementary to said first threaded portion on the outer surface of said spool member, said segments disposed on and interlocked with said spool member by the meshing of said complementary first and second threaded portions.

A method of manufacturing a spherical bearing having an outer member with an opening therethrough and a concave inner surface on the inner surface of the outer member, an inner member with a convex outer surface complementary to and in precise spherical bearing conformity with the concave inner surface comprising the steps of preforming the inner and outer members to their substantially, final dimensions, forcing the inner member within the opening of the outer member, the inner member acting as a die to enlarge one end of the opening thereby cold working an annular portion of the outer member which surrounds the opening.

Vibration damping annular elastomeric members are mounted between outer spherical bearing members and elements which are attached to inner spherical bearing members to prevent vibrations between the elements and the outer bearing members. The elastomeric members extend outwardly beyond the connection between the inner bearing member and the elements so that the elastomeric members are compressed as the elements are connected to the inner bearing member.

Method of making a spherical bearing includes a bearing liner having a low-friction layer containing a resin matrix which includes therein a dispersion of self-lubricating particles. The particles include powdered or flock polytetrafluoroethylene particles and grahite fibers.

A method of manufacturing a bearing which advantageously includes a self-lubricating liner in which the bearing liner includes a woven fabric coated with a resin and powdered or flocked polytetrafluoroethylene particles on one side thereof, the liner and its resin cured in place within the bearing, a parting compound disposed on a bearing surface in contact with the liner having the self-lubricating particles disposed therein, the parting compound inhibiting bonding between the bounding surface and the liner during curing.

A spherical bearing assembly having an inner race member and an outer race member, the inner surface of the outer race member being a concave spherical surface, the outer surface of the inner member being a complementary convex spherical surface, the inner member including a spool member having a first threaded portion disposed on its outer surface and at least two spherical segments, each segment having a second threaded portion on its inner surface complementary to the said first threaded portion on the outer surface of the said spool member, the said segments disposed on and interlocked with the said spool member by the meshing of the said complementary first and second threaded portions, the said spool member's axial length is somewhat greater than the axial length of the said bore such that the said spool member, when threaded in a meshing relationship with the said spherical segments, a portion of the said threaded spool will extend beyond the lateral faces defined by the spherical segments, the said extension of the said spool member being adapted to receive a threaded nut-like member to further lock the said spool member and the said spherical segments in their respective operational positions, the improvement comprising the provision of a conical recess on the said nut member on the side thereof abutting the said spherical segments, the angle of the said conical surface of said recess being substantially tangential to the outer convex spherical surface of the said inner member.

Self-adjusting bearing

A spherical bearing assembly has a metal inner race member and an outer race member. The inner surface of the outer race member is a concave spherical surface and the outer surface of the inner member is a complementary convex spherical surface. The outer member includes an annular recess the base of which is threaded. The recess is adapted to threadably receive a first yieldable plastic annular ring whose outer surface is threaded with threads complementary to the threads on the base of the recess. A second formable and yieldable annular ring is also received in the recess in a side-by-side relationship with the first annular ring. The inner surface of the first and second annular rings provide approximately one-half of the concave spherical surface of the outer race member. The first annular ring operationally captures the second annular ring and the inner race member within the outer race member.

Spherical bearing assembly with insert member

A spherical bearing includes an outer member having a hole extending from side to side, the surface of the hole being concave and spherical so that the outer member has constricted portions at each side. The outer member also has a walled keyway extending downward from the hole and extending axially from side to side of the outer member substantially perpendicular to the sides of the outer member; a walled key in the keyway is co-extensive with the keyway. The key also has a concave and spherical top surface corresponding to the surface of the hole so that the key has shoulder portions corresponding to the constricted portions of the outer member. A partially spherical inner member has flat sides, the inner member being held in the outer member by impingement of the spherical surface of the inner member against the constricted portions of the outer member and the key being held in the outer member by impingement of the shoulder portions of the key against the spherical surface of the inner member. A radial slot extends through the walled key. A resilient member disposed in the slot and abut the inner surface of each of the walls, with an adjusting member in the wall of the key to vary the width of the slot thereby varying the bearing tolerance between the inner and outer member and varying the degree of compression of the resilient member and therefore the degree of the preloading force exerted by the key member on the spherical surface of the inner member.
