The invention relates to an improved process for the preparation of fungicidally active compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 individually are lower alkyl of from 1 to 4 carbons or halo-(lower alkyl) of from 1 to 4 carbons or R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 together with the carbon to which they are attached form a 3 to 7 membered cycloalkyl ring or lower alkyl-substituted cycloalkyl of from 4 to 9 carbons, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 individually are hydrogen or lower alkyl of from 1 to 4 carbons and X is methylene or oxygen, and salts of those compounds which are basic.
