A display having a variably controlled backlight and/or driver is disclosed. The backlight includes a first light source that emits light within a first spectral power distribution and has a first radiant power output. A second light source emits light within a second spectral power distribution matched to an optical filter for producing a perceived chromaticity and luminosity matching the perceived display appearance without the optical filter.

Advanced LEP display mode, architectures and methodologies for display compensation

A display including a curved backlight and system for stray light control is disclosed. In embodiments, the curved backlight includes a curved substrate and an array of light sources disposed on the curved substrate, collimating optics, and a diffuser. The array of light sources includes a first group of light sources and a second group of light sources. The collimating optics are arranged to receive and collimate light only from the first group of light sources. The diffuser is arranged to receive and diffuse the collimated light from the collimating optics and light from the second group of light sources. The display further includes a liquid crystal layer arranged to receive light generated by the array of light sources and to display an image. The display further includes a controller configured to control the array of light sources such that at least some of the light sources emit light.

Curved backlight and system for stray light control

A display is described. The display includes an array of light sources, collimating optics, a diffuser, a liquid crystal layer and a controller. The array of light sources includes a first group of light sources and a second group of light sources. The collimating optics are arranged to receive and collimate light from the first group of light sources, but not the second group of light sources. The diffuser is arranged to receive and diffuse the collimated light, directed normal to the diffuser, from the collimating optics and light from the second group of light sources. The liquid crystal layer is arranged to receive light from the diffuser and to display an image. The controller is configured to control the array of light sources such that at least some of the light sources emit light.

Backlight and display for stray light control

The present disclosure is directed to a system for controlling light. The system may include a display. The display may include a light source configured to emit light having a specified spectral output. The system may also include a light filter applied to a substrate separate from the display. The light filter is configured to block light within the specified spectral output. The light filter is further configured to allow light outside of the specified spectral output to pass through the light filter.

Light control system

A tunable light generating assembly uses ultraviolet and blue light emitting diodes to pump red and green quantum dots in a quantum dot layer to generate white light. A dielectric mirror substrate having a wavelength selective reflectance is configured to reflect ultraviolet wavelengths, and to pass blue and longer wavelengths. The portion of the ultraviolet light that is not absorbed in the quantum dot layer is reflected rather than transmitted, where it has another chance to be absorbed in the quantum dot layer, thereby increasing the overall conversion efficiency. The increased energy associated with the ultraviolet light further results in greater conversion efficiency in the quantum dot layer. The ultraviolet and blue LEDs may be driven by an electronic circuit that varies the amount of power applied to each LED to control the brightness and color balance of the generated white light.

Quantum dot tunable assemblies and methods

A system and method are disclosed employing a dielectric mirror layer, highly reflective at wavelengths below a cut off but highly transparent at wavelengths above the cut off, is placed within a display assembly. This dielectric mirror layer creates a very efficient reflecting cavity for a portion of a Light Emitting Diode (LED) pumping spectrum. Accurate dielectric filter tuning allows an increased portion of the pumping spectrum to be converted to desired wavelength spectrum and also raise the luminance ratio of the display to a useful value for display applications. Variable and active tuning of the cut off wavelength value functions to optimize system performance.

Quantum dot nano crystal LCD backlight system and related method

An apparatus for viewing stereoscopic images may include, but is not limited to: a first viewing lens including a first polarization layer; a second viewing lens including a second polarization layer; and one or more birefringence compensation layers. Further, the apparatus may be viewing glasses including a frame wearable by a user.

Apparatus for viewing 3D LCD displays

A light emitting diode (LED) night vision imaging system (NVIS) lens apparatus for use in filtering of a plurality of night-mode LEDs is provided. The lens apparatus includes an optical carrier material having a plurality of apertures disposed and arranged such that, when the lens apparatus is coupled to an LED backlight, each of the plurality of apertures allows light from a corresponding day-mode LED to be transmitted therethrough without filtering. The lens apparatus also includes filter material coupled to and supported by the optical carrier material. The filter material is disposed and arranged on the optical carrier material such that, when the lens apparatus is coupled to the LED backlight, light from each of a plurality of night-mode LEDs is filtered by the filter material. Method and apparatus for data entry for a liquid crystal display

A flexible filter for use in filtering wavelengths of light that interfere with night vision awareness systems is disclosed. A filtering material is applied to a first flexible film in a substantially liquid form and is cured thereto using ultraviolet light. The filtering material filters wavelengths of light between about 610 and 930 nanometers when cured. A second flexible film is temporarily held in place by a support member. The second flexible film is applied to the cured filtering material and is fused thereto using a combination of increased temperature and pressure for a predetermined time. The first and second flexible films are made of polyurethane.

Flexible NVIS filter

A display includes a light source. The display also includes a filter positioned to receive light from the light source. The filter is a dye-based filter and attenuates light in the infrared range. The filter can be configured to have a very sharp spectral cutoff. The filter can be an NVIS filter. The display can be utilized in an avionic display system with night vision equipment. The filter can include a host polymer doped with a dye including cobalt or nickel.

Dye-based filter

A variably controlled LCD backlight is disclosed. The backlight includes a first light source that emits light within a first spectral power distribution and has a first radiant power output. A second light source emits light within a second spectral power distribution and has a second radiant power output. A detector detects the first and second radiant power outputs. A processor is connected to the detector and calculates chromaticity and luminance values of the emitted light based on the first and second radiant power outputs. The processor compares the calculated chromaticity and luminance values with desired chromaticity and luminance values, respectively. A controller is operationally connected to the processor and adjusts one or more of the first radiant power output and the second radiant power output in response to a difference between the calculated chromaticity and luminance values and the desired chromaticity and luminance values.
