A method for effecting a superficial chemical skin peel is provided wherein a concentrated solution of salicylic acid in a dermatologically acceptable solvent is applied to be treated. The concentrated salicylic acid solution contains at least 15 wt % salicylic acid and preferably at least about 20 wt % salicylic acid, The composition and method are useful in the treatment of skin disorders such as photodamaged skin, hyperpigmentation, acne vulgaris, and the like.

Composition and method of effecting superficial chemical skin peels

Various skin disorders, excluding acne are treated by topical application to the skin of a retinoid-composition including a retinoid in a dermatologically acceptable vehicle at such a concentration and applied in such a way as to induce desquamation of the skin to ameliorate the disorder. Preferably, the compositions contain greater than 0.1 weight percent tretinoin, and more preferably at least 0.2 weight percent tretinoin. The vehicle is preferably a solvent for the retinoid such as an alcohol/glycol or hydroalcoholic vehicle, but it is also possible to apply the retinoid in a non-solvent vehicle such as emulsifying or suspending the retinoid in a cream, dressing, gel, ointment or liquid polymer, with or without penetration enhancers. The treatment achieves rapid amelioration of skin disorders such as photodamaged skin, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, premalignant cancers including actinic keratoses, wrinkles, superficial scarring, epidermal atrophy and atypia, and keratosis pilaris, by daily or every other day application for about one to two months. Thereafter, the high strength applications may be tapered off, and the treated skin maintained with more conventional lower concentration compositions.

Method of treating skin disorders with high-strength retinoids

Various skin disorders, excluding acne are treated by topical application to the skin of a tretinoin-containing composition including tretinoin in a dermatologically acceptable vehicle at such a concentration and applied in such a way as to induce desquamation of the skin to ameliorate the disorder. Preferably the compositions contain greater than 0.1 weight percent tretinoin, and more preferably at least 0.2 weight percent. The vehicle is preferably a solvent for the tretinoin, such as an alcohol/glycol or hydroalcoholic vehicle, but it is also possible to apply the tretinoin in a non-solvent vehicle such as emulsifying or suspending the tretinoin in a cream, dressing, gel, ointment or liquid polymer. The treatment achieves rapid amelioration of skin disorders such as photodamaged skin, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, premalignant cancers, wrinkles, superficial scarring, epidermal atrophy and atypia, and keratosis pilaris by daily or every other day application for about one to two months. Thereafter, the high strength applications may be tapered and the treated skin maintained with more conventional lower concentration compositions.

Inflammatory dermatoses are controlled and cleared by topical application to the affected areas of the skin of a composition containing both a corticosteroid and a retinoid. The combined therapy is more effective than either active ingredient alone and is particularly effective for chronic dermatoses which are or have become resistant to corticosteroid treatment alone. After clearing has been obtained with once or twice daily applications of the corticosteroid-retinoid composition, usually after several weeks, clearance can be maintained by less frequent application or lower concentrations of the composition or by application of only one of the corticosteroid or retinoid, less potent corticosteroids, or other non-steroidal therapies, depending upon the particular dermatosis being treated.

Moreover, with persistent treatment dermal blood cells and vessels increase and the epidermis and dermis thicken, resulting in improved ability of the skin to sense, resist and recover from irritation or injury. The treatment is particularly useful for human facial skin and preferably applied in amounts insufficient to cause excessive irritation.

A method for the cosmetic treatment of human skin, particularly facial skin, for the removal of materials from the surface and the sebaceous follicles is disclosed. The method comprises applying a layer of liquid polymerizable adhesive to the skin, then applying a pliable adhesive tape to cover the applied liquid adhesive and allowing the polymerization of said layer of polymerizable adhesive to take place and then removing the layer of polymerized adhesive from the skin by stripping the tape from the skin.
