A phosphor blend for a compact fluorescent lamp is described wherein the phosphor blend comprises a green-emitting Tbphosphor, a YO:Euphosphor, a SrBPO:Euphosphor, a MgGeOF:Mnphosphor, and optionally a BaMgAlO:Euphosphor, wherein the blend contains from 1% to 20% by weight of the SrBPO:Euphosphor and from 5% to 30% by weight of the MgGeOF:Mnphosphor. A compact fluorescent lamp having a phosphor coating containing the phosphor blend produces a light that is perceived as more pleasing than the light produced by standard compact fluorescent lamps.

A lamp base has a projection that carries lamp contacts and has an outer surface formed with retaining formations arrayed with irregular spacing. A socket forms a recess into which the projection can be inserted with play and apertures provided with contacts engageable with the lamp contacts. Retaining formations in the socket fit with the lamp-base retaining formations in only one defined angular alignment of the lamp base and the socket. The projection has a central plug projecting toward the socket and forming a lamp key coded for a predetermined lamp wattage. The socket has a hole corresponding to the plug and itself forming a socket key coded for the maximally admissible lamp wattage for the socket. The lamp base only fits into the socket when the lamp wattage indicated by the lamp key does not exceed the maximally admissible lamp wattage defined by the socket key.

A self-ballasted fluorescent lamp () that comprises a housing () formed to contain a ballast. The housing () has a top surface () with openings () leading from the exterior of the housing () to the interior. The openings () can be in the form of raised bosses having upstanding walls (). A restricted portion (), which can take the form of a flange, is formed with the opening () and a safe end-of-life enabling device () is positioned in the opening () and in contact with the restricted portion (). The safe end-of-life device () is tubular, has low thermal conductivity and in preferred forms of the invention is a glass such as quartz or a ceramic such as aluminum oxide. The ends () of a fluorescent lamp () penetrate the tubular end-of-life device () and extend into the interior of the housing for suitable connection to an enclosed electronic ballast. A retainer () is positioned opposite the restricted portion for maintaining the end-of-life device within the opening. The retainer () is a typical compact fluorescent cement that is used to fix the lamp to the housing. Alternatively, the retainer can be an adhesive silicone or a threaded washer.

End-of-life protection for compact fluorescent lamps

A U-shaped compact fluorescent sun-tanning lamp ( ) capable of generating and transmitting desired and undesired wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation, for example, the desired wavelength is in the range of 352 nm and the undesired wavelength is in the range of 254 nm. The lamp ( ) comprises two lamp tubes ( ) that are transparent to the desired wavelength of the ultraviolet radiation and substantially opaque to the undesired wavelength of the ultraviolet radiation. The tubes ( ) are connected at the upper portion by a bight ( ) that in an unmodified state is transparent to both the desired and the undesired wavelengths of the ultraviolet radiation. A modification ( ) on the bight ( ) is opaque to at least the undesired wavelength of ultraviolet radiation. In a preferred embodiment the modification is a ceramic paint ( ).
