A battery enclosure is provided that externally shorts the enclosed battery, or batteries, immediately prior to the battery being punctured. As a result, the battery's state-of-charge is decreased, leading to a less severe reaction when the battery case is punctured.

Battery packaging system

A method is provided for achieving a constant driving range in an electric vehicle over a multi-year period (e.g., 5, 8, 10 years), where the preset driving range corresponds to a percentage of the driving range that is achievable with the initial battery pack capacity. Prior to each charge cycle, the method first determines the current battery pack capacity and then determines a set of optimized charging parameters based on the current battery pack capacity and the preset driving range. Charging is then performed in accordance with the set of optimized charging parameters.

Method of providing constant driving range in an electric vehicle

A charging system is provided for use with the battery pack of an electric vehicle, where both the charge level and the charging rate may be specified over a range of available levels and rates, respectively. Multiple resistance values that characterize the internal resistance (DC resistance) of the battery pack are generated based on the reductions in battery pack voltage that occur during the non-charging intervals.

Characterizing a rechargeable battery through discontinuous charging

A battery is rendered to a consistent discharged state in a two-phase battery discharge operation. In a first of the two discharge phases, a constant discharge current is drawn from the battery until a threshold battery voltage is reached. In the second of the two discharge phases, executed after the threshold battery voltage is reached during the first-phase, a time-varying discharge current is drawn from the battery at a constant battery voltage until a threshold discharge current is reached.

Method of controlling battery state using constant-voltage discharge

A method is provided for optimizing the charging protocol used when charging the battery pack of an electric vehicle, where optimization is based, in part, on the user's intended departure time and intended travel distance. Based on the user's travel information the process determines (i) an optimal charge level that maximizes the battery pack's lifetime while assuring that there is sufficient energy for the vehicle to travel the intended distance and (ii) an optimal charging rate that maximizes the battery pack's lifetime while assuring that the battery pack is charged to the optimal charge level prior to the intended time of departure. Safety margins may be added to the user's travel information, thus insuring that the car is charged and ready for use if the user decides to leave earlier than expected, or if the travel takes a larger charge than expected.
