A door lock has a flush-mountable body. A forwardly facing recess is defined by the body. A paddle-type handle is pivotally carried by the body and is movable between a nested position within the body recess and an operating position. A spring-projected slide bolt is carried on the back of the body and is movable between projected and retracted positions. A key-controlled disconnect linkage is provided for selectively connecting and disconnecting the handle and the bolt. The disconnect linkage includes a mounting member which extends longitudinally along one side of the bolt and which is drivingly engaged by the handle. A disconnect member is supported on the mounting member and is arranged to be pivoted from side to side between connecting and disconnecting positions by the movement of a key-operated locking member. When the disconnect member is in its disconnecting position, the disconnect linkage makes no driving connection between the handle and the bolt, whereby movement of the handle causes no corresponding movement of the bolt. When the disconnect member is in its connecting position, the disconnect linkage provides a driving connection between the handle and the bolt, whereby movement of the handle from its nested position to an operating position will cause corresponding retracting movement of the bolt. A feature of the disconnect linkage is that it provides the lock with a 'slam' capability, meaning that when the bolt is projected, it can be slammed into latching engagement with a suitably configured strike regardless of whether the disconnect linkage is drivingly connecting or disconnecting the handle and the bolt.

A door lock has a flush-mountable body. A forwardly facing recess is defined by the body. The disconnect member is moved by a key-operated cam between connecting and disconnecting positions. When the disconnect linkage drivingly connects the handle and the bolt, movement of the handle from its nested position to an operating position will cause corresponding retracting movement of the bolt. When the disconnect linkage disconnects the handle from the bolt, movement of the handle is inoperative to cause retracting movement of the bolt. A feature of the disconnect linkage is that it provides the lock with a 'slam' capability, meaning that when the bolt is projected, it can be slammed into latching engagement with a suitably configured strike regardless of whether the disconnect linkage is drivingly connecting or disconnecting the handle and the bolt.

A flush mountable door lock includes a recessed body member, a lock bolt slidably mounted on the body member, and a paddle-shaped operating handle for moving the bolt. The handle is movable between nested and projected positions. A bolt actuator extends from the handle into a receiving formation provided on the bolt for drivingly interconnecting the handle and the bolt to effect retracting and extending movements of the bolt when the handle is moved toward its projected and retracted positions. A torsion coil spring is interposed between the body member and the handle, and serves the several functions of biasing the handle toward its nested position, maintaining play-free engagement between the handle and the body member when the handle is nested, and maintaining a play-free driving connection between the handle and the bolt when the handle is projected. A ball-spring detent system is interposed between the body member and the bolt, and serves the several functions of assisting in effecting final movement of the bolt to its extended and retracted positions as the bolt approaches these positions, releasably retaining the bolt in its extended position when the handle is nested, and releasably retaining the bolt in its retracted position when the handle is projected. The ball-spring detent system preferably includes a hardened steel ball carried in a closed-ended hole provided in the bolt. A compression coil spring is carried in the closed-ended hole and biases the ball outwardly of the closed-ended hole for selective engagement with spaced formations provided on the body member. One or more plastic inserts carried in the bolt may define the closed-ended hole and/or may define at least a part of the actuator receiving formation.

Flush-type door lock

A flush-mountable, key-controlled, handle-operated door lock is provided with an automatic self-locking linkage for permitting the handle to move once, but only once, out of a nested position after a key control has been operated to 'cock' the linkage. Once the linkage has been cocked, the handle can be moved one time out of and returned to its nested position, whereafter the linkage operates to retain the handle in its nested position until the key control is again operated to cock the linkage. The automatic latching linkage includes a housing assembly, a pair of cams, and a pair of springs. A feature of the automatic latching linkage is that its several components can be assembled easily on an existing, in-service lock to provide the existing lock with a one-trip automatic locking capability. The latching linkage components are assembled by installing the components one at a time in an essentially stacked arrangement, one atop the other. The simple assembly steps required can be carried out even where accessibility to the rearward face of an in-service lock is quite limited.

Self-locking key-controlled door lock

A door lock, particularly well suited for releasably retaining a pivotally mounted truck door in a closed position, includes a shaft and its operating means mounted on the door, and a pair of keeper members mounted on the door frame. A pair of cam members are secured to opposite end regions of the shaft. The shaft has a central portion which projects through openings formed in opposite sides of a pan-shaped housing. A handle is secured to the central portion for rotating the shaft to bring the cam members into and out of latching engagement with the keeper members. The handle is moveable between a nested position wherein the handle is nested within a recess defined by the pan-shaped housing, and a projecting position wherein the handle projects forwardly from the recess. A latch mechanism is carried by the housing and includes a latch member mounted for pivotal movement between latched and unlatched positions. The latch member is operable to engage and releasably restrain the handle from moving out of its nested position. A key-operated lock cylinder is carried by the handle, and has a lock member which is movable between locked and unlocked positions as a key is turned in the lock cylinder. The lock member is operable to retain the latch member in its latched position when the handle is in its nested position. A lock member reinforcing structure is provided which not only supports and rigidifies the lock member when the lock member is in its locked position, but also cooperates with the lock member to provide a back-up, secondary locking action which will keep the lock locked even if the primary locking system is disabled, as by tampering. A handle return spring is preferably interposed between the shaft and the housing to bias the handle toward its nested position.

Cam-type door lock with recessed handle

A door fastening apparatus, particularly well suited for fastening in closed positions the rear and side doors of truck bodies, includes an elongate tubular shaft rotatable to position a plurality of latch members in door locking engagement with a plurality of keeper members. A first latch member is rigidly permanently secured to the shaft near one end of the shaft. A second latch member is secured to the shaft near its opposite end by a bolted connection. The bolted connection permits the truck body manufacturer to cut the shaft to length depending on the height of the truck, whereafter the second latch member may be fastened in place without any need for welding. The second latch member is mounted on the outside of the shaft. A plug member is inserted into the sawed-off, open end of the tubular shaft. The second latch member and the plug member captivate the shaft wall. A bolt extends through aligned holes formed in the second latch member and in the shaft wall, and is threaded into a hole in the plug to form a rigid connection having an appearance substantially identical to a conventional welded connection.

Door fastening apparatus

A detent system is provided for releasably retaining a pair of relatively movable members of a lock assembly or other mechanism in one or more predetermined positions. The members are movable relative to each other to successively present a series of contiguous surface portions on one of the members in spaced, side-by-side relationship with a selected part of the other member. A hole is formed through the part, and a detent element is movably carried in the hole. The detent element has a rounded tip which is projectable from the hole for engaging the contiguous surface portions as the members move relative to each other. A detent receiving formation is provided at a location along the contiguous surface portions and is adapted to receive the rounded tip of the detent element when the members are in a predetermined relative position. A U-shaped spring clip is carried on the part and serves the several functions of retaining the detent element in the hole, of biasing the tip of the detent element into engagement with the contiguous surface portions, and of biasing the rounded tip into receiving engagement with the receiving formation when the members are in the predetermined position. The spring clip has formations on its legs which cooperate with the detent element to assist in retaining the spring clip in position on the part.
