An integrally molded trigger body has a mounting portion received through an opening in an upper portion of a handle of a hand-held bar code scanner and pivotably mounted in the handle under spring bias. The trigger body has a tongue portion extending outwardly of the handle and downwardly beyond the opening toward a grip section of the handle. The tongue portion is contoured to conform with the contour of the grip section when the trigger body is depressed by a user of the scanner so as to actuate the scanning and reading modes.

A cable assembly enables a plurality of cables to be connected to circuitry in a module enclosed in a housing from which flexible strain relief members extend which encase some of the cables. Two of these strain relief members define an area which is generally wedge-shaped and contains a web of flexible material. A generally hourglass-shaped opening in the web releasably receives a loop of another cable which extends into the housing and may be connected to another peripheral device so as to provide strain relief for that other cable. The entire assembly may be a unit molded of elastomeric material which has an opening enclosing a circuit module and forming the strain relief members and the web with its loop retaining strain relief opening. The cable assembly is especially useful in data collection installations for connecting peripheral devices such as bar code scanners and data entry keyboards to a terminal such as a personal computer.

In order to alleviate condensation which can cause window fogging or frosting conditions when the scanner is used in frigid environments as in refrigerated warehouses, a holder for the scanner is provided which may be located on a forklift or at a strategic location where rapid temperature changes can occur. The holder defines a chamber having doors defined by brushes which contact each other and which are located at one end and across at least a part of the bottom of a housing providing the chamber. The bar code scanner has a head and a handle which may be inserted through the end door into the chamber and supported by a shoulder surface of the bottom of the head around the handle. The doors seal the chamber while having sufficient permeability to allow the escape of moisture. The inside of the chamber may be heated to a temperature which alleviates any fogging. The operator may insert the scanner into the holder from time to time to alleviate condensation, fogging or frost formation and to maintain the scanner in its temperature operating range.
