A method and apparatus for making a reinforced product of bituminous material comprises drawing a reinforcing mat through a tank of molten bituminous material to impregnate the mat, pulling the impregnated mat through metering rolls to establish the final thickness of the reinforced product, and controlling the relative position of the mat within the reinforced product by controlling the angle of incidence of the impregnated mat with respect to the metering rolls.

Method for making a reinforced product of bituminous material

The chill rolls of the cooling section are hollow, open-ended rolls. Spray nozzles in each roll spray water on the instantaneously upper half of the interior periphery and a fan blows air through the roll to effect evaporative cooling. Three different arrangements of the spray nozzles are disclosed for always directing spray to only the upper half of each chill roll.

A method and apparatus for cooling a continuously moving strip of asphaltic material includes directing the asphaltic material into a plurality of loops, spraying an evaporative liquid onto the asphaltic material, evaporating the evaporative liquid by causing an array of air jets to impinge on the asphaltic material subtantially normally to the asphaltic material, sensing the surface moisture of the asphaltic material subsequent to one or more of the loops, and modifying the flow of evaporative liquid sprayed in one or more of the loops in response to the sensed surface moisture.
