The production of a bearing surface by coating a known bearing material directly on the surface of a gear bore. A process of coating bearing materials directly onto the surface of a gear and the product thereof. The surface is preferably the inner bore surface of a planet gear. The coating methods include sputtering and vapor deposition. The bearing material applied as a coating is preferably a copper-lead composition. The resultant gear having a bearing coating can be useful in any high density, high efficiency epicyclic gear train for aircraft, marine or land based power transmissions.

A lubrication system for a planetary gear train (6) includes oil spray bars (32) intermediate each pair of planet gears (10). Oil exits the meshes between the sun gear 8 and the planet gears (10) and between the planet gears (10) and the ring gear (18) with substantial tangential velocity. The expelled oil enters an oil discharge passage (62) in an oil collection channel (56) adjacent to and axially outboard of the ring gear (18). In the preferred embodiment, herringbone gears are used and rotate so that oil within the gear meshes is pumped axially outward toward the channels. Interplanet baffles (80) and collection troughs (82) may also be used and are especially beneficial in an alternative embodiment which uses bihelical gears whose direction of rotation pumps oil within the gear meshes axially inward.

A geared drive system employing a planetary gear train conveys torque and rotary motion from a source thereof to a bladed propulsor or other device requiring torque and rotary motion. A pivotable joint arrangement connects the planet carrier to a rotating or static torque frame in a manner that isolates the carrier from torsional deflections and the deleterious effects thereof.

A stator assembly 16 for a gas turbine is disclosed. Various construction details which increase the effectiveness of the use of cooling fluid are developed enabling the use of stator vanes which do not have blockable holes for cooling air. In one embodiment, a segmented seal ring extends circumferentially between an array of coolable stator vanes 34 and a casing 22 to block the vane cooling air from convectively transfering heat to the casing.
