A method for correcting Positron Emission Tomography (PET) data includes adjusting a tube current generated by the CT imaging system to a second tube current value that is less than a first tube current value used to generate diagnostic quality CT images, and imaging the patient with the CT imaging system set at the second tube current value. The method also includes generating a plurality of computed tomography (CT) projection data from the CT imaging system and preprocessing the CT projection data to generate preprocessed CT projection data. The method further includes filtering the preprocessed CT projection data to reduce electronic noise to generate filtered CT projection data, and performing a minus logarithmic operation on the filtered CT projection data to generate the corrected PET data.

A method of producing a nuclear medicine image of a subject comprising the steps of acquiring nuclear image data suitable to produce a nuclear tomographic image, the data being acquired by at least one gamma camera head () rotating about the subject at an average first rate, acquiring x-ray imaging data suitable to produce an x-ray tomographic image for attenuation correction of the gamma camera image, the data being acquired by an array of detectors () irradiated by an x-ray source () rotating around the subject at an average second rate which is within a factor of 10 of the first rate, and reconstructing an attenuation corrected nuclear medicine image utilizing the nuclear imaging data and x-ray imaging data.

A nuclear medical imaging system generates transmission and emission images simultaneously. The system includes a gamma camera and a linear transmission source disposed on opposite sides of an imaging region in which a patient lies. A plurality of views are taken at different rotational angles around a patient. At each angle, the view acquisition period is divided into two segments based on whether the transmission source is on or off. Emission image data is acquired either in both period segments or only while the transmission source is off. The transmission image data is acquired when the transmission source is on, and crosstalk image data is acquired when the transmission source is off.

Methods and systems for performing a tomographic scan which allow an operator to define a non-circular orbit so that a detector can be positioned close to a patient at each view are described. Such methods and systems provide that the patient to detector distance is reduced, which improves spatial resolution for the scan. In one embodiment, and to achieve a non-circular orbit, the camera and table/patient are moved with respect to one another. Specifically, the table is pinned in position and set to lateral and vertical positions during set-up. The same lateral and vertical table positions are maintained during the scanning phase. To get the camera closer or farther from the patient/table, the camera is pitched in or out. The camera head is tilted to achieve a tilt angle of zero degrees for all changes in pitch. As the camera pitches in and out, the central axis of the camera moves along the longitudinal axis of the table. To compensate for movement of the camera central axis, the table is extended or retracted longitudinally.
