A printing plate handling device for holding a printing plate () adjacent to one edge () of the plate, especially adjacent to a bent-over leading edge or a bent-over trailing edge of the printing plate, with a mechanism for holding the printing plate () in a flat, frictionally-engaged manner along a surface area of the printing plate adjacent to one edge () of the printing plate.

Printing plate handling device

Exposed printing plates are bent in the area of a bending device to form a leading end and a trailing end. Each exposed and bent printing plate is grasped in the area of the bending device at the leading end or at the trailing end of the printing plate by means of a gripping bar and transferred together with the gripping bar to a transporting device. The transporting device transports the printing plate together with the gripping bar toward a printing press, where the printing plate is removed together with the gripping bar from the transporting device in the area of the printing press. While grasped by the gripping bar, the plate is transferred to a form cylinder of a printing mechanism of the printing press.

Method for handling printing plates

A printing plate cartridge for a press including a housing having an old printing compartment for holding a printing plate to be removed during a printing plate change and a new printing plate compartment for holding a printing plate to be mounted on a form cylinder of a press during a printing plate change. A printing plate to be mounted on the form cylinder is removable from the new printing plate compartment via a first opening for feeding to the form cylinder during a printing plate changing operation. A printing plate to be removed from the form cylinder is capable of being fed to the old printing plate compartment via the first opening during a printing plate changing operation.

A roller element for pressing a flexible printing plate against a form cylinder of a printing unit in a rotary printing machine during a first mode of winding the printing plate on the form cylinder and a second mode of unwinding the printing plate from the form cylinder. The roller element has at least one winding roller, a first device for positioning the at least one winding roller against the printing plate during the first mode of winding the printing plate on the form cylinder and for moving the at least one winding roller away from and out of contact with the printing plate during the second mode of unwinding the printing plate from the cylinder, at least one unwinding roller and a second device for positioning the at least one unwinding roller against the printing plate during the second mode of unwinding the printing plate from the form cylinder and for moving the at least one unwinding roller away from and out of contact with the printing plate during the first mode of winding the printing plate on the form cylinder.

To ensure accurately aligned handling of a plurality of superposed webs (3, 4) forming a composite web, which is to be folded longitudinally twice, particularly to maintain alignment of the individual folded web portions for subsequent application of indices, month, or other date identification and the like, particularly for book and calendar printing, two longitudinally located folding triangle or formers (22, 40) are located, one immediately behind the other, in the path or stream of flow of the webs, in which the first one receives the webs, after lateral alignment and the like, from the printing machine, and the second one is rotated 90.degree. with respect to the incoming web to the first folding former, and applies a second fold. This ensures that the web is always processed in a linear path without twist or lateral offset, thus ensuring alignment of the individual elements of the composite folded web (8). Preferably, the first one, in the flow of the web, of the folding formers (9, 22) is height-adjustable to accommodate different formats of receiving paper and ensuring that the folded edge will always be in a predetermined plane, which will be the plane of arrival of the folded products to the second folding former (11, 40), and provide a reference edge for subsequent handling apparatus, such as perforators or punches (14), a cutter (16) and belt transport systems (17,19).

To accurately place a modular replaceable or changeable deformation tool drawer (200) in position on a frame frame (1), and permit a variety of different operating procedures to be carried out on printed products supplied to the system without requiring substantial adjustment, the operating tools are retained in a box-like deformation tool drawer which can be inserted in the frame, and held in position by a group of clamping elements, such as fluid operated or electromagnetic cylinders and/or pistons, and, in addition, hold-down screws (6) are secured to the frame to hold the drawer in position on the frame and permit fine adjustment thereof with respect to the frame, and hence with respect to a paper web passing therethrough, before securely clamping the drawer by the clamping elements for production operation.

To indicate externally of a printing machine the position of a turning bar, the turning bar (15) drive spindle (1) is coupled to a numerical indicator (11) by a worm gearing (8, 9). The numerical indicator, having a plurality of number wheels, is capable of indicating the position of the turning bar (15) on a traverse rod (14). Preferably, a stop wheel (6) having ball-loaded detents at its circumference provides for predetermined angular positions of fractional revolutions of the spindle.

To permit adjustment of air flow through air exchange openings (7,8,9;25,29) of a hollow outer turning rod tube (11,23,30), a plurality of inner tube elements (12,24,32) are axially located within the outer tube, and formed with part-circumferentially extending slits (13) in alignment with the air exchange openings. The inner tube elements can be, slectively, rotated for alignment of the slit (13) with the air exchange openings, or blocking of the air exchange openings by solid portions of the tube elements. Rotation can be effected by adjustment knobs (FIGS. 1-3: 17) having an inner gearing (16) engaging a side gearing (15) on the tube elements; by finger adjustment (FIG. 4) or by positioning wheels (FIG. 5: 34) in engagement with a roughened, stippled, ribbed or corrugated surface portion or region of the inner tube elements.
