A system and method for protecting a rotorcraft from entering a vortex ring state, the method including monitoring a vertical speed of a rotorcraft, comparing the vertical speed to a vertical speed safety threshold, and performing vortex ring state (VRS) avoidance in response to the vertical speed exceeding the vertical speed safety threshold. The performing the VRS avoidance includes determining a power margin available from one or more engines of the rotorcraft, limiting the vertical speed of the rotorcraft in response to the power margin exceeding a threshold, and increasing a forward airspeed of the rotorcraft in response to the power margin not exceeding the threshold.

System and method for protection against vortex ring state

A method of designing a rotor blade for a rotary aircraft includes establishing a target thrust-weighted solidity of the rotor blade, calculating a reverse flow circle of the rotor blade at a target forward speed of the rotary aircraft, inboard of the reverse flow circle, decreasing chord of the rotor blade relative to a baseline rotor blade possessing the target thrust-weighted solidity, and outboard of the reverse flow circle, increasing the chord of the rotor blade relative to the baseline rotor blade. The rotor blade possesses the target thrust-weighted solidity of the baseline rotor blade and improved stall margin or speed margin at the target forward speed relative to the baseline rotor blade.

Method and system for inverse-tapered high-speed rotors

Load management system and methods are described for aircraft, including tailsitters. A load management system can comprise a pole coupled the fuselage and free to rotate and swing. The pole can comprise a cargo hook and a distal end that can be releasably coupled to a cargo cable or cargo. The pole can be coupled near its distal end to a retractable cable that is deployed from a position aft of the pole. During landing, takeoff, and when otherwise in hover mode, the retractable cable can be retracted—holding the pole along or near the fuselage. During transition to, or during, flight mode, the retractable cable can be deployed which can harmonize the cargo's center of gravity with the needs of the tailsitter aircraft.

A method of providing an anti-torque force in a rotorcraft with an anti-torque system comprised of a primary ducted tail rotor system mechanically connected to an engine, and a secondary ducted tail rotor system electrically connected to an electric power supply. The method includes receiving an indication of a change in the operating condition of the anti-torque system based upon a change in a rotorcraft condition input, a feedback input associated with a primary ducted tail rotor system and/or a secondary ducted tail rotor system, and/or a pilot input; responsive to the indication of the change, determining, by a control system, an anti-torque control input including at least a secondary output command for controlling the secondary ducted tail rotor system; and transmitting the secondary output command to the secondary ducted tail rotor system to energize at least one ducted tail rotor assembly therein to provide the second anti-torque force.

Systems and methods include providing a helicopter, with a fuselage, a tail boom extending from the fuselage, a main rotor system, and a tail rotor assembly disposed on an aft end of the tail boom. The tail rotor assembly includes a tail rotor housing, at least one normal ducted fan that generate anti-torque thrust to prevent rotation of the fuselage, and at least one canted ducted fan configured to generate both anti-torque thrust to prevent of the fuselage and lift to the tail boom in order to control the pitch of the helicopter. The canted ducted fans generate sufficient lift to prevent a nose-up orientation of the helicopter when the center of gravity of the helicopter is shifted rearward behind the main rotor system, while the normal ducted fans maintain sufficient anti-torque thrust to prevent rotation of the fuselage when the main rotor is operated.
