Selectively permeable, hollow composite fibers, well adapted for the dehumidification of air or carbon dioxide, are comprised of (a) an asymmetric, hollow, polymeric base fiber including both dense and porous component layers, and (b) a polymer layer coated onto the dense layer of said asymmetric hollow base fiber.

Hydrophilic semipermeable membranes which retain their capacity for filtration, even after drying, and which are well adapted for either ultrafiltration or microfiltration, are comprised of at least 70% by weight of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVFD) and up to 30% by weight of a hydrophilic polymer compatible therewith, e.g., a cellulose acetate or sulfonated polysulfone.

Filamentary edible proteins having fat globules uniformly dispersed therethrough are shaped, e.g., by wet spinning, from homogeneous protein/fat formulations, the diameters of the fat globules being from 1 to 60 microns and the fat having a degree of saponification of no greater than 5%. Such fibrous proteins are, for example, attractive meat substitutes.
