A fuel injector (10) is provided for each cylinder of an internal combustion engine, the injector including an electronically operated control valve (146) disposed between supply passage 42 and a timing chamber (98) to control the admission of fuel into and out of the timing chamber. A primary pumping plunger (62) and a secondary plunger (90) are axially spaced within the central bore of the injection body, and a normally closed injection nozzle (14) is situated at one end of the injector body. A mechanical linkage (27, 28, 30) associated with the camshaft of the engine drives the primary pumping plunger (62) against the bias of a main spring (18). The timing chamber (98) is defined between the plungers (62, 90) and a metering chamber (128) is defined between the secondary plunger (90) and the nozzle (14). An electronic control unit (52) responds to engine operating conditions, and delivers a timing and metering signal to the control valve (146) to close the valve and seal the timing chamber for a controlled period of time. The sealed timing chamber forms a hydraulic link, so that the plungers (62, 90) move in concert during the injection and metering phases of the cycle of operation. When the signal from the ECU is terminated, the control valve opens, and breaks the link so that the primary plunger (62) moves independently of the secondary plunger (90) which is biased in a set position by a spring (96) after termination of the control signal. The timing function can be adjusted by the ECU relative to any preselected position of the crankshaft to optimize engine performance, while the metering function is achieved in a proportionate manner relative to the degree of camshaft rotation. A cam (22), having a profiled surface thereon, controls the mechanical linkage, and thus the primary pumping plunger (62), to produce the proportional metering function.

Single solenoid unit injector

A unit injector having a mechanically driven piston and a remotely situated metering piston situated in a bore. The interplunger volume defining a timing chamber and the volume below the metering piston defining a metering chamber. The injector further including a single electrically responsive valve for controlling the functions of injection timing and fuel metering and a single dump port fabricated in the walls of the bore for relieving the fuel pressure on the timing chamber which correspondingly permits the pressure of fuel in the metering chamber to be decreased.

Single dump single solenoid fuel injector

A fuel injection system for a diesel engine having injection and metering modes of operation for delivering fuel to an engine comprising a plurality of fuel injectors wherein each of said fuel injectors comprise a first port, a second port and a metering chamber for storing a premetered quantity of fuel, during the metering mode of operation, prior to the injection of said premetered quantity of fuel into the engine during the injection mode of operation. The system further includes manifold means for connecting in fluid communication each of second ports of each of said fuel injector, pressure regulating means connected between said manifold means and a fuel reservoir for regulating and for supplying fuel at said second determinable pressure to said second inlet port of each of the injectors and distributor pump means connected to the said first port of each of said fuel injectors and to the fuel reservoir for sequentially lowering said first pressure level to a pressure lower than that of the pressure established by said pressure regulating means thereby causing said piston to move causing said premetered quantity of fuel to enter said metering chamber of a particular one of said injectors through said second port and for sequentially thereafter increasing said first pressure level thereby causing said piston to pressurize the fuel within said metering chamber to initiate fuel injection into the engine through a nozzle.

Dual solenoid distributor pump system

A fuel injector is provided for each cylinder of an internal combustion engine, the injector including an electronically operated control valve disposed between supply passage and a timing chamber to control the admission of fuel into and out of the timing chamber. A primary pumping piston and a secondary floating piston are axially spaced within the central bore of the injection body, and a normally closed injection nozzle is situated at one end of the injector body. A mechanical linkage associated with the camshaft of the engine drives the primary pumping piston against the bias of a main spring. The timing chamber is defined between the pistons and a metering chamber is defined between the secondary piston and the nozzle. An electronic control unit responds to engine operating conditions, and delivers a signal to the control valve to close the valve and seal the timing chamber for a controlled period of time to form a hydraulic link so that the pistons move in concert during the injection and metering phases of the cycle of operation. When the signal from the ECU is terminated, the control valve opens, and breaks the link so that the primary piston moves independently of the second piston. The timing function can be adjusted by the ECU relative to any preselected position of the crankshaft to optimize engine performance. The metering function is controlled by the pressure drop across a restricting orifice in the passageway feeding fuel to the metering chamber. The flow rate through the metering orifice is proportional to the square root of the pressure drop across the orifice.

Pressure time controlled unit injector

An electrically controlled unit injector for a diesel engine wherein both timing of injection and the quantity of fuel premetered into the injector are controlled by a single solenoid. The control of the timing portion of the cycle is accomplished by a timing port of the valve which, when open, permits fuel to flow into the timing chamber and, when closed, operates against high pressure to shut off the flow of fuel from the timing chamber. The metering function is initiated by the upward travel of a metering plunger in response to the upward travel of a pumping plunger while the timing port of the valve is closed. Metering is terminated by a metering port of the valve which shuts off the supply of fuel to the metering chamber. The timing and metering ports of the valve are controlled by the single solenoid. Metering quantity control may be of the pressure-time or volumetric metering type.

Electronically controlled diesel unit injector

A pressure responsive switch for modifying an actuation signal generated through a solenoid valve responding to a sway control signal to limit the operation of a brake applying servomotor and thereby prevent locking of the wheel brakes in a trailer braking system.

Pressure limiter means for controlling the operation of a solenoid valve

A solenoid operated distribution valve for supplying a servomotor in a trailer with a sway control braking signal in response to a sway signal being evaluated in a comparator. A wave spring surrounds the plunger of the solenoid to nullify the movement thereof such that the output force which operates the distribution valve is a direct function of the sway signal.
