A method for synthesis of N-phosphonoalkyliminodiacetic acid or derivatives thereof by forming a reaction mixture having an acid catalyst, a compound of the following general formula R&#x2014;CH&#x2014;NX&#x2014;CH&#x2014;Rand a compound having one or more P&#x2014;O&#x2014;P anhydride moieties to form a compound having a formula R&#x2014;CH&#x2014;N(&#x2014;CHPOR)(&#x2014;CH&#x2014;R) wherein in R&#x2014;CH&#x2014;NX&#x2014;CH&#x2014;R: X is &#x2014;CH&#x2014;OH or &#x2014;CH&#x2014;COOH; Rand Rare independently selected from the group consisting of nitrile, C-Calkyl carboxylate, and carboxylic acid for when X is &#x2014;CH&#x2014;OH, or Rand Rare both carbonyl groups linked by a hydrogen substituted nitrogen atom or a C-C-alkyl substituted nitrogen atom; and Ris H, an alkyl group, or an aryl group; the anhydride moieties in the P&#x2014;O&#x2014;P anhydride compound have one P atom at the oxidation state (+III) and one P atom at the oxidation state (+III) or (+V); and 2) hydrolyzing the mixture to form N-phosphonomethyliminodiacetic acid or one of its derivatives.

Method for the synthesis of N-phosphonomethyliminodiacetic acid

A method for securing the use of an aqueous medium under any substantial exclusion of metal ion interference is disclosed. A phosphonic acid compound containing: a selected phosphonate moiety and a moiety selected from a limited number of species; or hydrocarbon chains containing aminoalkylene phosphonic acid substituents; or alkylamino alkylene phosphonic acids containing an active moiety embodying N, O, and S. The technology can, by way of illustration, be used in numerous applications including secondary oil recovery, scale inhibition, industrial water treatment, paper pulp bleaching, dispersant treatment, sequestering application, brightness reversion avoidance and paper pulp treatment.

Novel phosphonate compounds are disclosed embodying an aminophosphonate moiety and a selected reaction partner. These compounds offer beneficial alternatives, and additional possibilities, to extant phosphonates and are capable of delivering desirable benefits from an application standpoint and from a compatibility standpoint broadly.

Phosphonate compounds

A method is disclosed to inhibit scale formation in aqueous systems whereby a threshold amount of a scale inhibiting agent, represented by an aminoacid alkylphosphonic acid, is added to the aqueous system. The aminoacid moiety can be represented by &#x3b1;-species or by species having, at least, two or more carbon atoms between the carboxylic moiety and the amine group. These aminoacid based inhibitors exhibit unusually superior performance and system acceptability compared to leading state-of-the-art inhibitors.

Method of scale inhibition

A method for the manufacture of amino alkylene phosphonic acids is disclosed. Pure POis hydrolyzed in the presence of a homogeneous Broensted acid catalyst whereby the pH of the reaction medium is maintained below 5 and the free water content of said reaction medium is, after the POhydrolysis has been completed, from 0 to 40%. The required amine component can be added before, during, or in one preferred execution, after the POhydrolysis has been completed. Formaldehyde is then added and the reaction mixture containing the POhydrolysate, the amine and the formaldehyde is reacted in presence of a Broensted acid catalyst selected from homogeneous and heterogeneous species. The amino alkylene phosphonic acid reaction product can then be recovered in a manner known per s&#xe9;.

Method for the manufacture of aminoalkylene phosphonic acid

A process for the manufacture of dialkyl phosphites is disclosed. In detail, dialkyl phosphites are prepared starting from PO, or partially hydrated species thereof cumulatively P&#x2014;O, by reacting specific molar ratios of alcohol and P&#x2014;O, containing from 1 to 6 P&#x2014;O&#x2014;P bonds in the molecule, in the presence of trialkylphospite (TAP) to thus yield high purity and high yield of dialkyl phosphites. The P&#x2014;O reactant is preferably represented by liquid PO.

Process for the manufacture of dialkylphosphites

A method for the manufacture of dialkyl phosphites is disclosed wherein a P&#x2014;O component containing from 1 to 6 P&#x2014;O&#x2014;P bonds in the molecule is reacted with an alcohol and a carboxylic acid ester having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkyl group and from 5 to 20 carbon atoms in the esterifying alkyl group of the ester. The dialkyl phosphites are formed under simultaneous removal by distillation of the carboxylic acid formed.

Method for the manufacture of dialkylphosphites

A process for the manufacture of alkylamino alkylene phosphonic acids is disclosed. In detail, a specific phosphonate is reacted with an agent selected to yield an alkylamino moiety substituted by a radical selected from OH, OR', NH2, NHR&#x2032;, N(R&#x2032;), NH, N, S, S&#x2014;S and SH in aqueous alkaline medium having a pH of 8 or higher at a temperature of 0&#xb0; C. or higher.

Process for the manufacture of alkylamino alkylene phosphonic acids

A method for the manufacture of concentrated phosphorous acid starting from pure POis disclosed. The POis hydrolyzed, preferably under stirring in water in the presence of a homogeneous Broensted acid catalyst while maintaining in the hydrolysis/reaction medium a pH below 5 whereby the free water level, at the completion of the hydrolysis, is in the range from 0 to 40%.

Method for the manufacture of concentrated phosphorus acid

Surface treatment compositions containing selected phosphonic acid compounds are disclosed. The compositions contain major levels of surface-active agents in combination with additive levels of the phosphonic acid compounds, and, in accordance with needs and objectives, conventional optional ingredients and additive agents. The inventive compositions can provide significant performance benefits, among others novel synergies and eminently desirable regulatory and environmental acceptability.

Novel aminoacid alkylphosphonic acid compounds are disclosed. These compounds can be used in multiple applications, in particular in a scale inhibitor functionality in aqueous systems, including in marine oil recovery.

&#x3b1;-Amino acid phosphonic acid compounds, method of preparation of use thereof

A method of secondary oil recovery is disclosed wherein from 0.1 to 100 000 ppm of a medium soluble aminoalkylene phosphonic acid amine salt are used wherein both the aminoalkylene phosphonic acid moiety and the amine moiety are selected from a specifically defined class of compounds. The substantially medium soluble aminoalkylene amine phosphonates exhibit a significantly improved compatibility with the recovery medium and thus can propagate fairly freely into the medium and consequently cover a largely extended rock surface before being subject to precipitation in the form of a medium insoluble scale inhibitor. The amine compound is represented by combinations of structurally different compounds.
